Can I use a heading like "Teaching Experience" instead of "Work Experience"?

Yes. Specific experience headings such as "Teaching Experience", "Clinical Experience", "Research Experience" or "Sales Experience" are clear because they still contain the word "Experience". They also tell the reader at a glance that your history matches the job.

This works best when:

  • All or most of your jobs fit the heading.
  • You add a second heading such as "Other Experience" for roles that do not fit.

Example: A teacher moving into training might use "Teaching and Training Experience" followed by "Other Experience".

Avoid headings so narrow that you end up with several sections of one job each.

What headings should an academic CV use?

Academic CVs use more sections than a standard resume, but the headings should still be plain and descriptive. Common ones include:

  • Education
  • Research Experience
  • Teaching Experience
  • Publications
  • Conference Presentations
  • Grants and Funding
  • Awards and Honours
  • Professional Service or Memberships

Order them by what the role values most; research posts usually lead with research and publications, teaching posts with teaching.

If you apply through a university portal that uses an applicant tracking system, these clear headings help it and the hiring committee find each part. Keep citation style consistent across the Publications section.

Can I rename sections or add my own heading in ResumeBuilder.ae?

You can add a Custom Section with your own heading, and you can reorder sections. The builder also includes ready-made sections such as Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, Projects, Languages, Professional Training, Awards, Volunteer Work, Internships, Publications, Research, Professional Memberships, Academic Experience and References.

Tips for custom sections:

  • Use a plain, descriptive heading, such as "Key Achievements" or "Licences".
  • Use a built-in section when one already fits, rather than recreating it.
  • Check the preview to make sure the order reads well from top to bottom.

The ATS-readiness check in the builder gives a rule-based estimate of structure and completeness; it is not an official employer score.

Should I put the job field in my heading, like "Marketing Experience"?

It can help when all your jobs are in that field, because it signals fit at a glance. "Marketing Experience", "Finance Experience" or "Hospitality Experience" are clear and still contain the word "Experience", which readers and software understand.

Be careful when your history is mixed. If only some of your jobs are in marketing, putting all of them under "Marketing Experience" is misleading. Split them instead:

  • "Marketing Experience" for the relevant roles
  • "Other Experience" for the rest

Do not reshape the heading for every application if your history does not change. Plain "Work Experience" is always a safe fallback.

Is it OK to put dates in a section heading, like "Experience 2015 to 2025"?

No. Keep dates with each entry, not in the heading. A heading with a date range may not be recognised as a standard section, and it duplicates information that already appears under each job.

Put the dates on the line with each role.

Example:
"Work Experience
Procurement Officer, Desert Build LLC, Abu Dhabi, Mar 2021 to Present"

If you want to signal that older roles are summarised, use a separate heading such as "Earlier Experience" and list those roles briefly, still with their own dates. That keeps your timeline clear without crowding the heading.

Do I need a heading for my secondary school or high school results?

Not a separate one. Put school results under your "Education" heading, after your degree or diploma. Most people with a university degree can drop school details entirely, unless the employer asks for them.

When to include school:

  • You are a school leaver or have no higher education yet.
  • The employer or application form asks for school grades, which is common for some Indian and Gulf applications.

Example under Education:
"Higher Secondary Certificate (Science), [School Name], 2021"

Keep each line in the same format as your other education entries so the section reads cleanly.

What heading suits a list of software and tools for an IT resume?

"Technical Skills" is the clearest heading. "Tools and Technologies" and "Technical Proficiencies" are also widely understood. Under the heading, group items with short labels so the list is easy to scan.

Example:
"Technical Skills
Languages: Python, JavaScript, SQL
Frameworks: React, Django
Cloud and DevOps: AWS, Docker, GitHub Actions"

Grouping helps both recruiters and software read the list as separate items. Use the standard names that appear in job postings, and include both the full name and the abbreviation where both are used, such as "Amazon Web Services (AWS)". List only tools you can discuss confidently in an interview.

Avoid two common mistakes. First, do not show tools as logos or icons only; a logo has no text for software to read. Second, do not list every tool you have ever opened. A focused list of current tools, backed up by bullets in your experience that show how you used them, is far more convincing than a long list nobody can check.

Can I shorten headings to save space, like "Exp." or "Edu."?

No. Write headings in full. Abbreviations like "Exp.", "Edu.", "Certs" or "Quals" save very little space and may not match the words systems expect. They also look rushed to a recruiter.

If you are short of space, save it elsewhere:

  • Cut older or less relevant bullet points.
  • Merge small sections, such as Awards into Experience.
  • Reduce extra blank space between sections.

Abbreviations are fine inside your content when they are standard in your field, such as "MBA", "IFRS" or "CPR", but headings should stay as plain words.

Is it OK to add emojis to my section headings?

It is best to avoid them. Emojis may not display correctly in every system or PDF viewer, can turn into empty boxes or odd characters when text is extracted, and look informal to many recruiters.

Instead of "🎓 Education" or "💼 Experience", simply write "Education" and "Experience" and use bold or a larger size for emphasis.

If you apply for a creative role at a very informal company, a playful touch might suit a portfolio site, but keep the resume file itself clean and text-based. That way it works whether it is read by software, printed or forwarded internally.

Should I use sub-headings like "Responsibilities" and "Achievements" inside each job?

It is usually unnecessary. Most strong resumes list three to six bullets under each job, putting achievements first, without extra labels. Sub-headings make each job longer and can be read as new sections by some systems.

If you do want to show the difference, a light approach works better:

  • Start with one line describing the scope of your role.
  • Follow with bullets that show results.

Example:
"Store Supervisor, City Mart, Doha, 2022 to Present
Led a team of 12 across two shifts in a high-volume grocery store.

  • Reduced stock losses by introducing weekly spot checks."

Should I use a "Relevant Coursework" heading on my resume?

Only if you are a student or recent graduate and the courses clearly match the job. A short line or small section titled "Relevant Coursework" can show knowledge you have not yet used at work.

Keep it brief and specific:

Example: "Relevant Coursework: Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance, Quantitative Methods, Audit Principles"

Place it under your degree in the Education section rather than as a separate main section; that keeps your structure simple. Remove it once you have work experience or projects that show the same knowledge more convincingly.

What heading should I use for freelance or self-employed work?

List it under "Work Experience" like any other job, with a clear title such as "Freelance Graphic Designer" or "Self-Employed Consultant". This keeps it in your main timeline, so readers and systems see it as real work.

Example:
"Freelance Content Writer, Self-employed, Remote, Jan 2022 to Present

  • Wrote website copy and blog articles for clients in hospitality and real estate."

A separate heading such as "Freelance Projects" can work if you have many short client jobs alongside a main career, but avoid hiding freelance work under "Other" or "Additional Information", which may suggest a gap.

Should publications and research have separate headings?

Yes, if you have enough of each. "Publications" for papers, articles and books, and "Research" or "Research Experience" for projects and roles, are both standard and easy to find.

If you have only a few items, a combined heading such as "Research and Publications" keeps the page tidy.

Format publications consistently, using a recognised citation style for your field.

Example: "Khan, S. and Ali, R. (2024). Water reuse in desert agriculture. Journal of Arid Studies, 12(3), 45 to 60."

Researchers in industry often only need two or three key publications; academic CVs usually list all of them.

Do human recruiters also prefer standard section headings?

Yes. Recruiters usually scan a resume quickly to find specific things, such as your current job, your qualification or a required tool. Familiar headings let them jump straight to what they need.

Creative headings make readers stop and work out what each section is. That small friction can count against you when a recruiter has many applications to review.

Standard headings do not make your resume dull. What makes it memorable is the content: clear titles, specific achievements and evidence of results. Let the headings do the simple job of signposting, and let your bullets do the selling.

Is it a problem if my headings are in the Word document's header area?

Yes, keep section headings in the main body. The header and footer areas of a word processor are sometimes ignored or read separately by systems, so a heading placed there may be lost or appear out of place.

The header area is meant for repeating information, such as a page number or your name on page two, not for content headings.

To check, open the document and click into each heading. If it is in the header or footer zone, cut it and paste it into the main page. Then copy the full text into a plain text editor to check that everything appears in the right order.

What heading should a veteran use for military service?

Use "Military Service" or "Military Experience", or include the roles under "Work Experience" if they are your main career. Both approaches are clear to readers and software.

What matters more is translating military titles and duties into language a civilian employer understands.

Example: "Logistics Supervisor (Sergeant), [Armed Force], 2016 to 2022

  • Managed inventory and transport for a unit of 150 personnel."

Keep the rank where it helps, but lead with a civilian-equivalent title. Avoid acronyms that outside readers will not know, or explain them once in full.

Should I copy the job posting's section names, such as "Requirements", as my headings?

No. Job postings use headings like "Requirements", "Responsibilities" or "What You'll Bring" to describe the job; your resume should use standard resume headings to describe you. Copying the posting's headings would confuse both readers and software.

Instead, match the content:

  • If the posting lists "SAP experience", show where you used SAP in your Work Experience and list it under Skills.
  • If it lists a degree, make it easy to find under Education.

Your headings stay the same for every application; your content changes to show how you fit each job.

On a two-page resume, should I repeat a heading on page two?

It is not required, but a short "(continued)" label can help when a section runs across the page break. For example, "Work Experience (continued)" at the top of page two tells a reader where they are.

Simpler ways to handle the break:

  • Let a section end on page one and start a new one on page two where possible.
  • Avoid splitting one job entry across two pages.
  • Add your name and page number in the footer or at the top of page two.

Systems read the text as one continuous document, so a "continued" label is mainly for the human reader. Keep the heading wording the same so it is clearly the same section.

Should I write "Resume" or "Curriculum Vitae" as a title at the top?

No. Your name is the title. Writing "Resume", "CV" or "Curriculum Vitae" at the top uses valuable space and can even be read by some systems as your name or a section heading.

Start with your full name in a larger font, then your professional title and contact details.

Example:
"Rahul Menon
Civil Engineer"

The file name is a better place to show it is your resume, such as "Rahul-Menon-Resume.pdf". Some traditional employers in parts of South Asia still use a "Curriculum Vitae" title, but it is not needed for most applications today.

What headings does a functional or skills-based resume need for ATS?

Use "Summary", a skills heading such as "Key Skills" or "Skills Summary", then still include "Work Experience" and "Education". Many applicant tracking systems look for job titles, employers and dates, so a functional resume without a dated work history may leave those fields empty.

A combination (hybrid) layout is usually safer:

  • Summary
  • Key Skills, with two to four skill groups and short evidence bullets
  • Work Experience, with titles, employers and dates
  • Education

This lets you lead with transferable skills while still giving software and recruiters the timeline they expect.

Example skill group:
"Project Coordination

  • Planned a school-wide sports week for 600 students, managing a volunteer team of 15."

Many recruiters are wary of resumes that hide dates, because they wonder what is missing. Showing a short, honest work history, even if it is in a different field, usually builds more trust than leaving it out. Keep each skill group under a plain heading so the structure stays easy to follow.

Can students use a "Leadership Experience" heading for clubs and societies?

Yes. "Leadership Experience", "Leadership and Activities" or "Extracurricular Activities" are clear headings for roles such as club president, event organiser or team captain. They signal transferable skills to employers hiring graduates.

Format each entry like a job, with your role, organisation, dates and one or two results.

Example:
"Leadership and Activities
President, Engineering Society, [University], 2023 to 2024

  • Organised a careers fair with 25 employers and about 400 students."

Keep these entries below Education and any internships, unless they are your strongest experience.
