Write three to five lines that say who you are, what you offer and what you are looking for. A UK CV personal statement is essentially a short profile at the top of the page.

Example: "Recent geography graduate from the University of Leeds with strong data and GIS skills, developed through a dissertation mapping flood risk in West Yorkshire. Experienced in customer service through three years of part-time retail work. Looking for a graduate role in environmental consultancy."

Keep it specific to the role and avoid long descriptions of your personality. This is different from a university personal statement, which is a longer essay.

Yes, if space is tight and your resume is already clearly focused on one role. A summary is helpful but not essential, and a weak one is worse than none.

Consider skipping it when:

• Your education and projects clearly show your direction.
• You need the space for a strong internship or project.

Keep it when:

• You are changing field or your degree does not obviously match the job.
• You want to state the role you are targeting.
• The employer may skim only the top third of the page.

If you include one, keep it to three lines and make every word count.

Name it briefly if it is relevant and recognised in the field, then keep the full details for your Certifications section.

Examples:

• "Accounting graduate who has passed two ACCA Applied Knowledge exams."
• "IT graduate holding an entry-level cloud fundamentals certification."
• "Marketing graduate certified in Google Analytics."

Use the official name, and if the certification is in progress, say so: "currently studying for". Do not mention minor online courses in the summary; they belong further down the page.

Keep it short and practical: your study status, availability and the qualities the job needs.

Example: "Second-year nursing student available evenings and weekends. Friendly and reliable, with previous experience on a supermarket checkout and handling cash accurately. Looking for part-time work in retail or hospitality."

For part-time roles, availability matters as much as skills, so state it clearly. You can use a few personal qualities here, as long as your experience backs them up. Skip the summary entirely if your resume is short and clear.

A good accounting graduate summary names the degree, key technical skills, any practical experience and progress towards a professional qualification.

Example: "BCom Accounting graduate with a three-month internship in accounts payable, processing supplier invoices and bank reconciliations. Skilled in Excel, Tally and QuickBooks, with coursework in IFRS. Pursuing ACCA and seeking a junior accountant role."

Adjust the software to what you actually used and what local adverts ask for. If you have no internship, use a project such as "prepared a full set of financial statements for a case company in a final-year module".

Name your degree, the engineering tools you know and the project or internship that best shows practical ability.

Example: "Mechanical engineering graduate with skills in SolidWorks, AutoCAD and MATLAB. Designed and tested a low-cost solar water heater prototype as a final-year capstone. Completed a summer internship in preventive maintenance at a manufacturing plant. Seeking a graduate mechanical engineer role in HVAC or manufacturing."

Tailor the final sentence to the area each employer works in, such as oil and gas, building services or automotive.

Mention your degree, design and site skills, software and any site exposure.

Example: "Civil engineering graduate with experience on a residential construction site during an eight-week internship, assisting with quantity take-offs and daily progress reports. Skilled in AutoCAD, Revit and ETABS. Seeking a graduate site or design engineer role."

If you are aiming at design rather than site work, lead with design software and your structural or drainage project. If your target country has a formal registration path for engineers, mention it only if you have started it.

Highlight your specialism (power, electronics, controls), key tools and one practical project or internship.

Example: "Electrical engineering graduate specialising in power systems, with skills in MATLAB/Simulink, AutoCAD Electrical and PLC programming basics. Final-year project modelled load flow for a small industrial facility. Seeking a graduate electrical engineer role in power distribution or building services."

For electronics roles, swap in circuit design tools and an embedded systems project. Keep the summary to three or four lines.

Name your strongest languages and tools, a project that shows you can build things, and the type of role you want.

Example: "Computer science graduate skilled in Java, Python and SQL, with experience building REST APIs and React front ends. Led a four-person team to build a campus event booking app as a final-year project. Seeking a junior software engineer role."

If you have contributed to open-source projects, hackathons or a relevant internship, swap that in as the proof point. Keep a link to GitHub in your contact details rather than in the summary.

Mention your qualification, clinical placements, core skills and the type of setting you want to work in. If your country requires registration or a licence, include it only when you hold it, with its details in a separate section.

Example: "BSc Nursing graduate with clinical placements in medical, surgical and paediatric wards. Skilled in patient observation, wound care and electronic health records under supervision. Holds BLS certification. Seeking a newly qualified staff nurse role in an acute hospital."

Name your placement areas, because nursing recruiters often match them to vacancies.

Show your marketing tools, one campaign or project with a result, and the area of marketing you want.

Example: "Marketing graduate with hands-on experience in social media content, email campaigns and basic SEO. Managed Instagram for a student society, increasing event attendance compared with the previous year. Skilled in Canva, Meta Business Suite and Google Analytics. Seeking a digital marketing executive role."

If you have a portfolio, link it in your contact details. Use only results you can show from real account data.

Combine your HR knowledge with people skills and any experience in recruitment, admin or employee support.

Example: "Human resource management graduate with internship experience in recruitment coordination, including screening CVs and scheduling interviews. Familiar with HR information systems and employee onboarding processes. Seeking an HR assistant or recruitment coordinator role."

If you have no HR internship, use a project such as a dissertation on employee engagement, plus customer-facing work that shows confidentiality and communication.

Mention your analytical and modelling skills, any market or banking exposure and your target area.

Example: "Finance graduate with skills in financial modelling, ratio analysis and Excel. Analysed listed companies for a student investment society and presented buy or hold recommendations to members. Seeking an entry-level financial analyst role."

For banking roles, add customer-facing experience; for corporate finance, mention budgeting or forecasting work. Keep any figures from society portfolios clearly labelled as student or simulated work.

Show breadth plus one or two practical strengths, and name the type of role you want, because business degrees lead to many paths.

Example: "BBA graduate with a concentration in operations management and strong Excel and presentation skills. Completed a supply chain internship analysing delivery delays for a regional distributor. Seeking an operations or business analyst role."

Change the focus for each application: for sales roles, mention customer experience; for HR roles, people projects; for admin roles, organisation and office software.

Name your tools, the type of data you have worked with and a project that shows analysis leading to a conclusion.

Example: "Data analytics graduate skilled in SQL, Python (pandas) and Power BI. Built a dashboard analysing three years of public air quality data to compare seasonal trends across cities. Seeking a junior data analyst role."

Mention the size or type of datasets only when accurate. A link to a portfolio or code repository in your contact details helps employers check your work quickly.

Mention your degree, areas of legal interest, research and drafting skills and any practical exposure such as moots or clinics.

Example: "LLB graduate with interests in commercial and employment law. Strong legal research and drafting skills, developed through a dissertation on arbitration and the university legal clinic. Seeking a paralegal or legal assistant role."

If your country has a separate route to qualify as a lawyer, do not describe yourself as a lawyer or advocate until you have completed it. State your current stage accurately.

Name your qualification, subjects or age group, your teaching practice and one strength.

Example: "BEd graduate specialising in primary mathematics, with two teaching practice placements in Grade 3 and Grade 5 classrooms. Experienced in planning differentiated lessons and using interactive whiteboards. Seeking a primary teacher role."

If teaching in your target country requires a licence or registration, list it in a separate section only when you hold it, with its number and expiry as the regulator requires.

Show your design focus, main tools and the kind of work in your portfolio.

Example: "Graphic design graduate specialising in branding and social media visuals. Skilled in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Figma. Created a full brand identity for a local café as a final-year project. Portfolio available on request or via the link above. Seeking a junior designer role."

Keep the summary simple; your portfolio does the persuading. A clean, readable resume design also shows your judgement.

Combine your degree with hands-on service experience and any systems or departments you have worked in.

Example: "Hospitality management graduate with internships in front office and food and beverage at a five-star hotel. Experienced with property management systems and guest relations. Fluent in English and Arabic. Seeking a management trainee role in hotel operations."

Hospitality employers care strongly about service experience, so mention part-time work in restaurants or hotels if you have it.

Mention your degree, practical training, key knowledge areas and licensing status only as it truly stands.

Example: "PharmD graduate with hospital and community pharmacy training, including dispensing, medication counselling and stock management under supervision. Familiar with pharmacy management systems. Preparing for the licensing exam. Seeking a pharmacist or pharmacy intern role."

If you hold a licence, list it in a separate section with its details as required by the regulator. If not, avoid wording that suggests you do.

Show your research and people skills, and point them at a clear target role, since psychology leads to many careers.

Example: "Psychology graduate with research experience in survey design and SPSS analysis, and two years of volunteering on a student wellbeing helpline. Seeking an HR assistant, research assistant or support worker role."

Choose one target per version: for research roles, lead with methods and software; for HR, with interviewing and confidentiality; for support work, with empathy shown through volunteering or care work.

Show your media skills, the platforms you have produced for and a clear target role.

Example: "Mass communication graduate with experience writing news features and producing short videos for the university's media centre. Skilled in Adobe Premiere Pro, WordPress and interviewing. Seeking a content writer or junior reporter role."

Add a link to a portfolio of published work in your contact details, and mention any languages you can write in professionally.

Mention your logistics knowledge, tools such as Excel or an ERP system and a practical project.

Example: "Logistics and supply chain graduate with skills in inventory analysis, Excel and SAP basics. Final-year project mapped a regional distributor's delivery routes and proposed changes to reduce empty trips. Seeking a supply chain coordinator or graduate trainee role."

If you have warehouse or retail part-time experience, add it, as it shows you understand operations on the ground.

Mention your design focus, software and one project from your portfolio.

Example: "Architecture graduate with strengths in sustainable residential design. Skilled in Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp and Lumion. Final-year thesis designed a low-energy housing block for a hot climate. Seeking a junior architectural assistant role."

If the title "architect" is protected in your target country, use "architectural graduate" or "architectural assistant" until you are registered. Always include a portfolio link.

Name your lab techniques, any research project and your target role in industry, healthcare or research.

Example: "Biomedical science graduate with laboratory skills in PCR, cell culture and ELISA. Completed a final-year research project on antibiotic resistance in hospital samples. Seeking a laboratory technician or quality control analyst role."

For non-lab roles such as medical sales or regulatory affairs, lead instead with communication, writing and attention to detail, and mention your scientific background as support.
