Paralegal / Legal Assistant resume
This guide helps paralegals and legal assistants write resumes that show precise, well-supervised legal support. It covers summaries that name your practice area, the skills and systems law firms look for, example bullets for litigation, corporate, conveyancing, compliance and document review work, and ways to show results without breaking client confidentiality. It also explains how to list qualifications accurately, how law graduates and legal secretaries can move into paralegal roles, and where paralegals can go next. Registration rules differ by country, so list any registration as your regulator requires. All examples are fictional.
How do I write a summary for a paralegal resume?
Name your practice area, the type of firm or legal team, your core tasks and the tools you use. Supervising lawyers want to know quickly whether you can support their kind of work.
Example summaries (fictional):
- "Litigation paralegal with five years in a commercial disputes team. Manage court bundles, e-disclosure in Relativity and filing deadlines for up to 30 active matters."
- "Corporate paralegal in an in-house legal team, supporting contract review, company secretarial filings and board minutes for 12 group companies across the GCC."
Keep it to two or three sentences. Avoid vague phrases such as "detail-oriented legal professional" unless you prove the detail with your practice area and volume.
What skills should a legal assistant put on a resume?
List legal research, document drafting, case management, court filing, e-discovery or e-disclosure, client communication and the systems you use. Group them so lawyers and HR can scan quickly.
Example grouping:
- Legal tasks: drafting standard letters and agreements, preparing bundles, proofreading, legal research, deadline diaries.
- Systems: case management software (for example Clio, iManage, NetDocuments or an in-house system), Westlaw or LexisNexis, e-discovery tools such as Relativity.
- Corporate support: company registers, board minutes, statutory filings.
- Other: Arabic–English legal translation support, time recording, billing.
Only list tools you have used. If you used research databases through a firm subscription, say so plainly.
Can you show me example bullet points for a litigation paralegal?
Yes. Good litigation bullets show the type of matters, the documents and deadlines you handled, and the scale. Adapt these fictional examples:
- Example: "Prepared and indexed trial bundles of up to 3,000 pages for commercial disputes, meeting every court filing deadline."
- Example: "Reviewed and coded 15,000 documents in Relativity for privilege and relevance under a senior associate's supervision."
- Example: "Maintained the team's court deadline diary for 40 active cases and sent weekly reminders to fee earners."
- Example: "Drafted witness statement first drafts from interview notes for review by the supervising lawyer."
Always make the supervision clear. Paralegals support lawyers, and overstating your independence can raise concerns in legal hiring.
How should I list paralegal certificates on my CV?
Put them in a Certifications or Qualifications section with the full name, awarding body and year. Paralegal qualifications vary a lot by country, so be precise about what you hold.
Examples people list (fictional details):
- Paralegal certificate from a recognised institute, 2024
- Law degree (LLB), 2021
- Certificate in Legal Translation (Arabic–English), 2023
- E-discovery or Relativity user training, 2025
Some countries have regulated or voluntary paralegal registration schemes, and some do not. Do not describe yourself as "licensed" or "certified" unless the official body issued that status to you. If your country's regulator or professional body requires a registration, list it with its number as they require.
I have a law degree but no legal job yet. How do I write a paralegal resume?
Lead with your degree, relevant modules, moot courts, legal clinics and internships, and show strong research and writing. Many law graduates start as paralegals.
What to include:
- Summary. Example (fictional): "LLB graduate with a legal clinic placement and an internship in a corporate law firm, seeking a paralegal role in commercial law."
- Education with relevant modules such as contract, company or employment law, and your dissertation topic.
- Practical experience: internships, legal clinics, moots, research assistant work.
- Skills: research databases, drafting, Arabic or other languages.
Example bullet (fictional): "Researched case law on employment contract termination and prepared memos for supervising lawyers in a university legal clinic."
What is the difference between a paralegal resume and a legal secretary resume?
A paralegal resume focuses on substantive legal work such as research, drafting and case preparation, while a legal secretary resume focuses on administration, diary management, typing and correspondence. Many roles mix both, so describe your real tasks.
Paralegal focus:
- Example (fictional): "Drafted first versions of non-disclosure agreements and summarised contract terms for review."
Legal secretary focus:
- Example (fictional): "Managed diaries, client correspondence and billing for three partners, typing from dictation at speed."
If you did both, put the tasks that match the job advert first. Use your real job title, and let the bullets show any extra responsibilities.
How do I show corporate or company secretarial work on a paralegal resume?
Name the entities, filings and governance documents you handled, and the volume. Corporate paralegals are valued for accuracy and deadline control.
Fictional bullets:
- "Maintained statutory registers and filing calendars for 25 group companies in the UAE, Bahrain and the UK."
- "Prepared board and shareholder resolutions and minutes for review by in-house counsel."
- "Coordinated document collection for a share purchase due diligence, organising 900 documents in the virtual data room."
- "Tracked trade licence and commercial registration renewals so none lapsed during my two years."
Keep wording precise: "prepared drafts for review" rather than "advised on" corporate matters.
How do I show measurable results as a paralegal?
Use volume, accuracy, deadlines and time saved. Legal work does not always have sales figures, but it has clear signs of reliability.
Ideas (fictional examples):
- Volume: "Managed document production for 18 active matters at once."
- Deadlines: "Met all court and regulatory filing deadlines across two years."
- Efficiency: "Created a precedent bank of 40 standard letters, cutting drafting time for routine correspondence."
- Billing: "Recorded time daily and helped reduce unbilled time at month-end for the team."
Avoid confidential details, client names and case outcomes that are not public. Focus on your process and contribution.
Should a paralegal resume name clients or cases?
Usually no. Client confidentiality is central to legal work, and naming clients or private matters on a resume can worry an employer. Describe matters by type and size instead.
Safe ways to describe work:
- "Supported a multi-party construction arbitration involving several contractors."
- "Assisted on the acquisition of a regional retail group by a private equity investor."
- "Worked on employment tribunal claims for a large hospitality employer."
Only name a matter if it is public, your firm allows it, and your role is accurately described. When unsure, leave the name out.
Which keywords do law firms use in paralegal job adverts?
Common terms include legal research, drafting, case management, court filings, bundles, e-discovery or e-disclosure, due diligence, contract management, document review, time recording, compliance, and practice areas such as litigation, corporate, employment, real estate or immigration.
How to use them:
- Match the practice area and title in the advert, such as "Corporate Paralegal" or "Legal Assistant – Litigation".
- Name the research and case management tools you used.
- Add languages if mentioned, especially Arabic–English in the Gulf.
The job-description comparison in the builder lists frequent advert terms that already appear in your resume. Use it to find gaps, but only add what is true.
How do I write a paralegal CV for law firms in the UAE?
Make your practice area, languages, document skills and jurisdiction exposure clear, and add optional details firms often ask about. UAE legal teams often work across onshore courts, free zone courts and arbitration.
Tips:
- Mention the jurisdictions or forums you supported, described accurately, for example onshore courts, DIFC or ADGM matters, or arbitration.
- Highlight Arabic–English skills such as reviewing translations or preparing bilingual documents.
- List legal research tools and case management systems.
- Add optional details like visa status and notice period if helpful.
Example bullet (fictional): "Coordinated legal translations of 60 court documents a month between Arabic and English with certified translators."
How do I show legal research and drafting skills on a resume?
Describe the questions you researched, the sources used and what the lawyer did with your work. That proves your research is useful, not just that you can search a database.
Fictional bullets:
- "Researched recent court decisions on limitation periods in Westlaw and prepared a five-page summary memo for the partner."
- "Drafted first versions of standard NDAs, engagement letters and powers of attorney from firm precedents."
- "Checked citations and cross-references in a 120-page arbitration submission."
If you have a writing sample, you may offer it at interview, but remove confidential details first.
What should a senior paralegal resume emphasise?
Emphasise managing complex matters, supervising or training junior staff, improving processes and working closely with partners. Senior paralegals are trusted with more independence within proper supervision.
Fictional bullets:
- "Coordinated the paralegal workstream on a large-scale document review involving 8 contract reviewers."
- "Trained 4 junior paralegals on bundle preparation and the firm's document management system."
- "Designed a matter-opening checklist adopted across the litigation department."
- "Acted as first point of contact for client document requests under partner supervision."
Keep routine admin short. Your scope and improvements should take most of the space.
How do I describe in-house legal team work rather than law firm work?
Explain the business you supported and the types of legal work you handled, such as contracts, compliance, disputes or corporate governance. In-house paralegals work closely with business teams, which is a different skill set from firm work.
Fictional bullets:
- "Supported a three-lawyer in-house team at a regional retailer, managing a contract database of 1,200 agreements."
- "Reviewed supplier contracts against the company's standard terms and flagged deviations to legal counsel."
- "Tracked contract renewals and sent alerts to business owners 90 days before expiry."
If you move between firm and in-house roles, show you understand the other side, such as billing in firms or business priorities in-house.
What mistakes do paralegals make on their resumes?
The most damaging mistake is a typo or formatting error, because accuracy is central to the job. Legal employers notice errors on a legal assistant's resume very quickly.
Other common mistakes:
- Overstating your role, for example "advised clients" when a lawyer gave the advice.
- Naming confidential clients or matters.
- Not stating your practice area.
- Long lists of software without context.
- Calling yourself "licensed" without a recognised licence.
Fix it by proofreading slowly, reading aloud and checking dates, titles and names. Example corrected bullet (fictional): "Prepared first drafts of client advice letters for review by the supervising associate."
How do I show e-discovery or document review experience?
Name the platform, the review type, the volume and your accuracy or speed. Document review is a common paralegal and contract role, and specific details help you stand out.
Fictional bullets:
- "Performed first-level review of 20,000 emails in Relativity for responsiveness and privilege."
- "Applied coding protocols set by the review manager, with low error rates in quality control checks."
- "Prepared production sets and privilege logs for review by the supervising associate."
If you have platform training or a certificate, list it under Professional Training. Mention technology-assisted review only if you used it.
How should a paralegal resume be ordered?
A common order is: contact details, summary, skills (including systems), legal experience, education, certifications and languages. Law graduates may put education above experience.
Notes:
- Put practice area and title near the top so the reader sees fit quickly.
- Keep education detailed if you are early in your career, including relevant modules and honours.
- Languages can be placed near skills in multilingual legal markets.
Use a clean, single-column layout. Legal employers generally prefer conservative formatting, and simple layouts are easier for applicant tracking systems to read.
How can a legal secretary or admin assistant move into a paralegal role?
Highlight the legal tasks you already do, such as drafting standard documents, preparing bundles or tracking deadlines, and add paralegal training. Many paralegals start in administrative legal roles.
Steps:
- Summary. Example (fictional): "Legal secretary with six years in a family law team, moving into a paralegal role. Prepare court forms, financial disclosure bundles and client letters for review."
- Bullets that show substantive legal work.
- A paralegal course or certificate, completed or in progress.
Example bullet (fictional): "Prepared financial disclosure bundles for 15 family law cases, cross-checking documents against court checklists."
What other careers can a paralegal move into, and how do I adjust my resume?
Paralegals often move into compliance, contract management, company secretarial work, HR, or legal operations. Adjust your resume to lead with the skills those roles use.
Examples by target:
- Compliance: regulatory filings, policy reviews, KYC document checks.
- Contract management: contract databases, renewals, standard terms.
- Legal operations: process improvement, legal technology, billing data.
- HR: employment law support, contract drafting, case files.
Example summary (fictional): "Paralegal with five years in employment law moving into HR advisory. Drafted employment contracts and policies and prepared tribunal bundles."
Keep one line about your legal background for context.
Do I need to show typing speed or dictation skills on a legal assistant resume?
Only if the job advert asks for them. Some legal secretary and assistant roles still list typing speed or digital dictation, but many paralegal roles focus on research and drafting.
If relevant:
- Skills: "Typing 65 wpm; digital dictation (BigHand or similar)".
- Bullet: Example (fictional): "Transcribed dictation for three partners and prepared same-day client letters."
Make sure any speed you list is a recent tested figure. If you are applying for a paralegal role focused on substantive work, leave typing out and use the space for legal tasks.
How do I show real estate or conveyancing paralegal experience?
Name the transaction types, documents, volume and your role in completion. Property paralegals are valued for organisation and deadline control.
Fictional bullets:
- "Supported 30 residential sale and purchase files at a time, from title checks to completion."
- "Prepared transfer documents and completion statements for review by the conveyancer."
- "Tracked searches, enquiries and mortgage conditions in the case management system."
- "Coordinated with developers on off-plan sale documentation."
Use the property terms used in your country. Property law and processes differ, so make sure your wording matches the market you are applying in.
How do I show legal translation or bilingual work on a paralegal resume?
Show the languages, the documents and the checks you made, and be precise about your role. In many markets, bilingual paralegals are in demand.
Fictional bullets:
- "Reviewed Arabic translations of contracts against the English originals and flagged errors to the certified translator."
- "Prepared bilingual Arabic–English correspondence for clients and authorities, for lawyer approval."
- "Summarised Arabic court judgments in English for the international client team."
Do not call yourself a legal translator or sworn translator unless you hold that recognised status. List any translation qualification in Certifications.
Should I include my law school grades or class rank on a paralegal resume?
Include them if they are strong and you graduated recently. Early in a legal career, grades can help show ability; after a few years, experience matters more.
How to include them:
- Example (fictional): "LLB (Hons), Upper Second Class, 2024".
- Add prizes or scholarships in Awards.
- Mention a dissertation topic if it relates to the job.
If your grades are average, you can leave them out and focus on practical experience, research skills and internships. Never round up or invent a grade.
How do I show compliance or regulatory support work as a paralegal?
Name the regulations or processes in general terms, the checks you carried out and the volume. Compliance support is a common paralegal path, especially in banking and financial services.
Fictional bullets:
- "Carried out KYC document checks for 50 new corporate clients a month and escalated gaps to the compliance officer."
- "Maintained the regulatory filing calendar and prepared draft submissions for legal review."
- "Updated the company's policy library after a regulatory change, tracking staff acknowledgements."
Avoid claiming you gave regulatory advice. Make your supporting role clear and name any compliance training you hold.
How do I list short contract paralegal or agency document review jobs?
Group them under the agency or a single heading, with the practice areas and platforms used, rather than listing each short project separately. Contract legal work is common and is not a negative when shown clearly.
Example layout (fictional):
Contract Paralegal – LegalStaff Partners | 2023–2025
- Five assignments with international law firms in Dubai and London (remote), lasting two to six months each.
- First-level document review in Relativity and Everlaw for commercial litigation and regulatory investigations.
- Prepared chronologies and bundle indexes for arbitration teams.
- Extended or rebooked by three of the five firms.
If one assignment was long or very relevant, list it as its own entry. Keep matter details general to protect confidentiality.
