Fonts and typography – Page 2

Are Google Fonts like Lato, Roboto or Open Sans OK on a resume?

Yes. Lato, Roboto, Open Sans, Source Sans, Montserrat and similar fonts are clean, modern and very readable, and they are widely used in resume templates.

The main thing to check is that the font is embedded in your final PDF. If you send a Word file and the reader does not have the font installed, it may be replaced with a default font and your layout can shift.

Tips:

  • Montserrat is wide and best kept for headings.
  • Lato, Open Sans and Roboto all work well for body text at 10 to 11 points.
  • Use one family for consistency, with different weights for hierarchy.

How do I create a clear visual hierarchy on my resume?

Use size, weight and spacing to show what is most important, in a consistent order. A clear hierarchy has about four levels:

  • Level 1: your name, the largest and boldest text.
  • Level 2: section headings, bold and slightly larger than body text.
  • Level 3: job titles, degrees and project names, bold at body size.
  • Level 4: body text, bullets, dates and locations, regular weight.

Add more space above higher levels than below them, so headings clearly belong to the content beneath. Avoid creating extra levels with colours, underlines or different fonts.

When the hierarchy is clear, a reader can skim your resume in seconds and still understand your career path.

Should I use a condensed or narrow font to fit more text?

No. Condensed or narrow fonts squeeze letters closer together, which makes text harder to read, especially on screens and in small sizes. They can also make your resume look crowded and cramped.

If you are short of space, the better solutions are:

  • Removing less relevant bullets or older roles.
  • Shortening long bullets to one or two lines.
  • Combining small sections.
  • Reducing margins slightly, but not below a reasonable minimum.

A resume that is easy to read is far more effective than one that fits more words onto the page.

Should my resume and cover letter use the same font?

Yes. Using the same font, sizes and header on both documents makes your application look consistent and organised. It shows attention to detail without you needing to say so.

Practical tips:

  • Copy the resume header, including your name and contact details, onto the cover letter.
  • Use the same body text size, or a size slightly larger in the letter, as it is mostly paragraphs.
  • Keep the same accent colour, if any.

In ResumeBuilder.ae you can write a matching cover letter in the builder for the same resume, which helps keep the design consistent. After paying for the resume PDF, the matching cover letter can be downloaded as a PDF at no extra cost within the same 7 days.

How should I format dates on my resume?

Choose one date format and use it everywhere. Common, clear formats are:

  • Month and year: "Mar 2021 to Jun 2024" or "March 2021 to June 2024".
  • Numeric: "03/2021 to 06/2024".
  • Year only: "2021 to 2024", acceptable for older roles or education.

Typography tips:

  • Align dates to the right margin, or put them consistently after the job title.
  • Use the same separator throughout: "to", a dash or an en dash.
  • Keep dates in regular weight, not bold, so they do not compete with job titles.
  • Use "Present" for your current role.

Avoid mixing formats such as "Jan 2020" in one place and "01/2020" in another. Inconsistency is one of the easiest mistakes for a reader to spot.

What is the difference between font size in points and how big text looks?

Points measure the font's design size, not how big its letters actually look. Different fonts at the same point size can look very different because their lowercase letters are taller or shorter and their letters wider or narrower.

For example, Calibri and Garamond at 11 points look smaller than Arial or Verdana at 11 points.

This means:

  • Do not choose a size by number alone.
  • Compare fonts by looking at the page at real size, on screen and printed.
  • When switching fonts, check the page count and line breaks again.

Aim for body text that feels comfortable to read at arm's length on paper and at normal zoom on a laptop.

Can I use a handwritten-style font for my name?

It is generally not a good idea. Script or handwritten fonts can be hard to read, look informal, and may not be read correctly by applicant tracking systems. Your name is the one piece of information every reader and system must get right.

Use a clean, bold version of your main font for your name. If you want a more distinctive look, try:

  • A slightly larger size or heavier weight.
  • Your name in capitals with slightly wider letter spacing (tracking) set by the template, not typed spaces between letters.
  • Your accent colour.

Designers applying for creative roles sometimes use a personal logo, but even then the name should also appear as plain text.

How much space should there be between paragraphs and bullets?

Bullets within the same job can be close together, with just a small gap, while different jobs and sections need clearly larger gaps. The aim is to show which items belong together.

A simple pattern:

  • Between bullets in one job: little or no extra space beyond normal line spacing.
  • Between one job and the next: a small gap, such as half a line.
  • Above each section heading: a larger gap, such as one line.

This grouping helps readers see the structure at a glance. If all gaps are equal, the page becomes a wall of text even if the font is perfect.

What font works best for a resume read on a phone?

Clean sans serif fonts with open letter shapes, such as Arial, Calibri, Lato, Open Sans, Roboto or Verdana, are usually easiest to read on a small screen. Many recruiters and hiring managers open attachments on their phones, so this matters.

Tips for phone readability:

  • Keep body text at 10.5 to 12 points.
  • Avoid thin or light font weights, which can blur.
  • Use short bullets rather than long paragraphs.
  • Make section headings clearly bold.

Open your final PDF on your own phone and scroll through it. If you need to zoom in heavily to read the bullets, increase the size or reduce the content.

Is it OK to use a light or thin font weight on a resume?

It is best to avoid light or thin font weights for body text. They look elegant in large headlines but become faint at small sizes, on low-quality screens and especially when printed in black and white.

Use regular weight for body text and bold or semi-bold for headings. If you like a lighter look, use a light weight only for a very large name, and check it prints clearly.

A simple test: print the page on an ordinary office printer. If any text looks faded or grey, switch to a heavier weight. Readers should never have to strain to see what you have written.

What size should section headings be compared with body text?

Make section headings one to three points larger than your body text, usually in bold. If your body text is 11 points, headings at 12 to 14 points work well. The difference should be clear but not dramatic.

You do not have to rely on size alone. Headings stand out well when you combine a modest size increase with:

  • Bold weight.
  • Capitals or small capitals.
  • Extra space above the heading.
  • A thin line underneath.

If headings are much larger than the text, the page starts to look like a poster and wastes vertical space. If they are the same size and weight as body text, readers will struggle to find sections quickly.

How do I keep formatting consistent across my whole resume?

Decide on a small set of styles first and apply them everywhere, then check the document line by line. Inconsistencies are easy for readers to notice and make a resume look rushed.

Check these points:

  • Every section heading uses the same font, size, weight and spacing.
  • Every job title, company and date follows the same pattern.
  • Dates use one format and one separator.
  • Bullets use the same symbol, indent and ending punctuation (either all full stops or none).
  • Spacing between jobs and between sections is the same throughout.

A resume builder or template helps, because styles are applied automatically. If you edit in a word processor, use its heading and paragraph styles rather than formatting each line by hand.

Text I pasted into my resume looks different from the rest. How do I fix it?

Pasted text often brings hidden formatting from its source, such as another font, size, colour, spacing or special characters. That is why one bullet may look slightly larger or in a different font.

To fix it:

  • Paste as plain text (often "Paste and match style" or "Keep text only").
  • Retype short items that still look different.
  • Re-apply the correct style to the whole paragraph.
  • Replace curly quotes, long dashes or symbols if they display oddly.

If you import an older resume into a builder, check every section after import, because line breaks and symbols may not carry over perfectly. In ResumeBuilder.ae, the import reads PDF or Word files in your browser and asks you to check each imported section.

What font suits an executive resume?

A refined, highly readable font such as Garamond, Georgia, Cambria, Calibri or Lato suits an executive resume. The goal is a confident, understated look that lets your leadership scope and results stand out.

Guidelines:

  • Use one font, or a classic serif and sans serif pair.
  • Keep body text at 10.5 to 12 points; senior readers may print the document or read it on a tablet.
  • Use a strong, clear name and section headings rather than decorative styling.
  • Allow generous spacing; a crowded executive resume looks less senior.

Avoid trendy display fonts, thin weights and heavy graphic elements. At executive level, polish comes from restraint and precise wording.

What font should I use for a resume in law or finance?

Choose a traditional, highly readable font. Serif fonts such as Georgia, Garamond, Cambria or Times New Roman suit law and finance, and clean sans serif fonts such as Arial or Calibri are equally acceptable.

These fields value precision and professionalism, so the typography should look careful and calm:

  • One font, used consistently.
  • Body text at 10.5 to 12 points.
  • Bold headings in capitals or title case.
  • Black text, with at most a dark navy accent.

Avoid display fonts, colourful styles and graphics. Your typography should look like a well-drafted document, because in these fields that is part of the job.

Which fonts suit IT and engineering resumes?

Clean sans serif fonts such as Calibri, Arial, Lato, Roboto, Open Sans or Source Sans suit IT and engineering resumes well. They look modern, read clearly on screen and handle technical terms, version numbers and acronyms neatly.

Tips for technical resumes:

  • Keep technical terms in the same font as the body text; you do not need a code-style font.
  • Make sure characters that look alike, such as capital I, lower-case l and the number 1, are distinguishable in your font.
  • Group skills under short bold labels, such as "Languages:" or "Cloud:".

Example: "Cloud: AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda), Azure DevOps, Terraform"

The focus should be on clarity and quick scanning of technologies and achievements.

Can I use a monospaced or code font on a developer resume?

You can use one sparingly, for example for a short code snippet or a GitHub handle, but it is not a good choice for the whole resume. Monospaced fonts are wide, take up a lot of space and are less comfortable to read in paragraphs and bullets.

If you want a subtle technical touch:

  • Use a monospaced font only for small elements, if at all.
  • Keep headings and body text in a clean sans serif.
  • Show your technical depth through specific tools, projects and results rather than styling.

Example: "Reduced API response time by caching database queries in Redis, cutting average latency in half."

Hiring managers care about what you built, not whether your resume looks like a code editor.

Do creative professionals need a special font on their resume?

Not necessarily. Designers and other creatives often choose a distinctive but readable font to show taste, and that can help, but the font should never get in the way of reading.

Good approaches:

  • A characterful font for your name and headings, with a clean font for body text.
  • Careful spacing, alignment and hierarchy, which show design skill better than an unusual font.
  • Embedding fonts in the PDF so the design looks as intended.

Avoid fonts that are difficult to read at small sizes, and keep a simpler version available for online application systems. Your portfolio is the place to show your full creative range.

What font is best for an academic CV?

A classic, readable font such as Garamond, Times New Roman, Georgia, Cambria or Calibri is best for an academic CV. Academic CVs are long, with detailed lists of publications, teaching and grants, so comfortable reading matters more than style.

Tips:

  • Use body text at 11 to 12 points.
  • Use a consistent citation style for publications, with italic for journal or book titles as your field requires.
  • Use clear bold headings for each section, such as Publications, Teaching and Grants.
  • Number or date-order publications consistently.

A plain, well-structured academic CV with excellent typography looks more credible than one with graphics or colour.

Does the font I choose affect my ATS score?

Usually not directly, as long as the font is standard and the text can be extracted correctly. Applicant tracking systems read text, not style. A common font in a text-based PDF should be read the same way whether it is Arial, Calibri or Georgia.

Font choice can matter indirectly when:

  • A decorative font produces strange characters when the text is extracted.
  • Special symbols are used instead of words.
  • Text is turned into images or placed in graphics.

The ATS-readiness check in ResumeBuilder.ae is an internal, rule-based estimate of structure and completeness, not a score from any employer's system, and a high score does not promise an interview. Focus on clear headings, relevant keywords and readable text.

Are serif fonts bad for applicant tracking systems?

No, that is a myth. Standard serif fonts such as Georgia, Cambria, Garamond or Times New Roman are read by software just as well as sans serif fonts, because the system reads the text characters, not their shape.

What actually causes reading problems:

  • Text stored as images, such as scanned resumes or headings saved as pictures.
  • Complex layouts with text boxes, tables or columns read in the wrong order.
  • Decorative fonts or symbols that do not convert cleanly.

Choose serif or sans serif based on readability and the tone you want. Then test by copying the text from your PDF into a plain text editor to check it comes through correctly.

Is Garamond a good font for a resume?

Yes. Garamond is a classic, elegant serif font that looks refined and professional. It suits law, academia, publishing, consulting and executive resumes particularly well.

Things to know:

  • Garamond looks small for its point size, so use 11.5 to 12 points for body text.
  • Some versions are lighter than others; choose one that prints clearly.
  • It pairs well with a simple sans serif for headings, or can be used on its own with bold headings.

Because Garamond takes up less horizontal space, it can help a tight one-page resume fit without looking cramped, as long as you do not shrink the size too far.

Is Cambria or Calibri better for a resume?

Both are good. Calibri is a modern sans serif that reads well on screen and gives a contemporary feel. Cambria is a sturdy serif designed for screen reading too, with a more traditional, formal tone.

Choose based on your field and personal style:

  • Calibri: technology, marketing, operations, hospitality, healthcare and most general roles.
  • Cambria: law, finance, academia, government and senior roles where a classic look suits.

Both are widely installed, so they rarely cause substitution problems. Many people use Cambria for headings and Calibri for body text, which is a well-matched pair.

Is Verdana or Tahoma a good resume font?

They are readable and acceptable, but they are wide fonts, so they take up more space per line. They were designed for screen reading, which makes them clear on phones and monitors.

If you use Verdana or Tahoma:

  • Choose a smaller size than you would for Calibri, such as 9.5 to 10.5 points for body text.
  • Keep bullets short, as wide letters mean fewer words per line.
  • Check your page count, as switching to these fonts can push content onto a second page.

Tahoma is slightly narrower than Verdana and also supports Arabic text in many systems, which can help for bilingual documents.

Should the text in a sidebar be smaller than the main text?

It can be slightly smaller, but not much. A sidebar often holds contact details, skills or languages, which are short items, so one point smaller than body text can look neat. Going much smaller makes it hard to read, especially on phones and when printed.

Tips:

  • Keep sidebar text at no less than about 9 to 10 points.
  • Use the same font as the main column.
  • Keep sidebar headings the same style as main headings.

Remember that two-column layouts can be read out of order by some applicant tracking systems. If you use one, keep key information such as job titles and experience in the main column.
