The education section for students – Page 3

I was a class topper or gold medallist. How do I show it?

Add it as a short line under your degree, using the official title of the award. Academic distinctions like this are worth highlighting.

Examples:

  • "Gold Medal, highest marks in B.Sc Chemistry, University X, 2025"
  • "Ranked first in class of 120 (Mechanical Engineering, 2025)"

Include rank details only if they are official and verifiable. If you received a certificate, keep it ready. Avoid vague wording such as "one of the top students" without evidence.

I went to several secondary schools. Do I list all of them?

No. List only the school where you completed your final qualification, such as A-levels, Class 12, IB or Grade 12. Earlier schools are not needed.

Example: "Class XII (CBSE), Sunrise Indian School, Dubai | 2024"

If you completed different qualifications at different schools, such as Class 10 at one school and Class 12 at another, list each qualification with its own school. Employers care about the qualification, not your full school history.

Should I mention that I repeated a year or a module?

No, you do not need to mention it on your resume. List your qualification with its dates and result. If the dates look longer than usual, an interviewer may ask, and you can answer briefly and honestly.

Never change dates to hide a repeated year, as employers may verify them. If a form asks directly about repeated years, failed modules or academic probation, answer truthfully. Focus your resume on what you achieved and learned.

I am not sure I will finish my degree. Can I still list it?

Yes, list it honestly with your current status, as long as you are still enrolled. If you have stopped, list the dates and the credits or years completed instead of an expected graduation date.

Still enrolled: "BSc Computing, University X | Expected 2027".
Stopped: "BSc Computing, University X | 2022 – 2024 (two years completed)".

Do not list an expected date you no longer plan to meet. If you are considering leaving, focus your resume on skills and projects so it stays strong whatever you decide.

How do I list a part-time degree I am doing while working?

List the degree with "part-time" and the expected date, and keep your job in the experience section. Employers often respect studying while working.

Example: "BSc Business Management (part-time), University X | 2023 – Expected 2027"

If the degree is relevant to the role you are applying for, consider placing education near the top, even though you have work experience. Make sure the dates overlap honestly with your job dates; this is normal and expected.

Can I add an achievement bullet under my degree?

Yes, one or two bullets under your degree are fine if they show something specific about your studies. Keep them short and relevant.

Examples:

  • "Led a team of five in a final-year case study presented to a panel from a regional bank."
  • "Achieved the highest mark in the cohort for Financial Modelling (2024)."

If you have more to say about a project, move it to a projects section. Avoid bullets that only repeat what the degree title shows, such as "Studied business subjects".

How much education detail should I keep two years after graduating?

Keep the degree, institution and year, and trim most student-level details. After a couple of years of work, your experience usually matters more.

What you might keep:

  • A strong grade or honour.
  • A thesis or project that relates to your current work.

What you can usually remove:

  • Module lists.
  • School results.
  • Minor activities.

Move education below experience if your work is now your strongest evidence. A detailed education section is helpful early on but can make you look less experienced later.

What order should my qualifications go in?

List them in reverse chronological order: the most recent or highest qualification first. This is the order most employers expect.

Example:
"MSc Finance, University X | 2025
BCom, University Y | 2023
Class XII, School Z | 2020"

If you are still studying for a degree, it goes first even though it is not finished. Keep the same order style as your experience section so the resume is consistent.

Is the education section required on a student resume?

Yes. For students and new graduates, it is essential, because it shows your main recent activity and qualifications. Employers expect to see it.

Even if your degree is unrelated to the job, include it briefly. If you are still at school, list your current school and expected qualifications. The only question is how much detail to give and where to place it, not whether to include it.

Should I mention that my degree programme is accredited?

Mention it if accreditation is meaningful for the job, such as an engineering degree accredited by a professional body, or a business degree with recognition from a professional institute. It helps employers understand the quality and recognition of your degree.

Example: "BEng Civil Engineering (accredited by a national engineering institution), University X | 2025"

Use the accreditation exactly as your university states it. Do not claim recognition you cannot confirm. Some employers also check recognition separately, so keep your documents ready.

Should I include my student ID or roll number on my resume?

No. Student ID numbers, roll numbers and registration numbers are not needed on a resume, and they are personal information.

Provide them only when an employer or application form specifically asks, for example during campus placement registration or background checks. Keep your resume focused on information that helps the employer decide whether to interview you. Sharing ID numbers on a document that may be forwarded or stored in several systems also adds an unnecessary privacy risk.

How do I show a placement year that is part of my degree?

Show the degree with the placement noted, and give the placement its own entry in your experience or internships section. The placement is work experience and needs bullets.

Education: "BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Industrial Placement, University X | 2021 – 2025"
Experience: "Software Developer (Placement Year), Fictional Tech Ltd | Jul 2023 – Jun 2024", followed by bullets.

This way, the dates make sense and your work experience gets proper detail.

I changed my major. Should I show the old one?

Usually no. Show the major you will graduate with. Changing majors is common and does not need to appear on your resume.

You can mention modules from your old major if they are useful for the job. Example: a student who switched from engineering to business might list "Relevant modules: Engineering Mathematics, Operations Management".

If the change affects your dates, an interviewer may ask, and a short explanation is enough.

Should I mention that my studies were in English?

Mention it if English ability is important for the job and your degree is from a country where people might not assume English-medium study. Some employers, especially in the Gulf and Europe, find this helpful.

Example: "BSc Accounting, University X, Cairo | 2025 | Medium of instruction: English"

If your degree was clearly English-medium, such as at a UK university, there is no need to say so. If the employer requires a formal English test, provide that separately.

My degree gives exemptions from professional exams. Should I mention it?

Yes, if the exemptions relate to the job. Many accounting and finance degrees give exemptions from some professional exams, and employers in those fields value this.

Example: "BSc Accounting and Finance, University X | 2025 | Exemptions from several ACCA papers"

Use the exact wording given by the professional body or your university. Do not suggest you are qualified or a member if you have only received exemptions. If you have passed further papers, list them separately with dates.

My university is not well known. How can my education section still impress?

Focus on what you achieved, not on the university's name. Employers often look at your grades, projects and skills as much as the institution.

Ways to strengthen it:

  • Include a strong grade or honour, if you have one.
  • Add relevant modules and a substantial project.
  • Show any competitions, research or industry links during your degree.
  • Mention accreditation if your programme has it.

Example: "Capstone project with a local logistics firm: redesigned their delivery routes and presented savings in fuel and time."

Never exaggerate the status of your university. Strong evidence speaks for itself.

How do I list a thesis that I am still writing?

List the working title and mark it as in progress, with the expected completion date. You can describe your approach so far.

Example: "Dissertation (in progress, due May 2027): Using machine learning to predict student drop-out rates

  • Collected and cleaned data from public education datasets; testing three prediction models."

Avoid claiming results you do not have yet. Update the entry once your thesis is submitted and graded.

How do I show credits completed if I have not finished my degree?

State the degree, the institution and the number of credits or years completed, using the terms your university uses. This is accurate and shows your progress.

Example: "Bachelor of Science in Nursing, University X | 2022 – 2024 | 75 of 120 credits completed"

This format works for degrees you have paused or left. If you are still enrolled and on track, an expected graduation date is usually clearer than a credit count.

Do employers check the education details on my resume?

Many do, especially for graduate roles, government jobs and positions in regulated fields. Checks can include asking for certificates and transcripts, contacting your university, or using a background-screening company. Practices differ by employer and country.

What this means for you:

  • Write your degree title, institution and dates exactly as they appear on your documents.
  • Give grades exactly as shown on your transcript, without rounding up.
  • Keep scanned copies of certificates and transcripts ready.
  • In the UAE and wider Gulf, employers often ask for attested certificates; follow the employer's instructions on what they need.

Small mismatches, such as a wrong graduation year, can delay an offer. Accurate details make checks quick and easy.

How do I make my education section stronger for a graduate scheme?

Make it specific to what the scheme looks for: relevant modules, strong results if you have them, and evidence of applied work, such as projects or case competitions. Graduate schemes often receive many applications from people with similar degrees.

Ideas:

  • Put your degree and expected date first, with your classification or GPA if it meets or exceeds any stated requirement.
  • Add a capstone or dissertation linked to the employer's sector.
  • Include honours or scholarships.
  • Mention study-related activities that show the scheme's values, such as teamwork or leadership.

Many schemes also use online forms, so keep your education details consistent between the form and your resume.

Should I include my school name if it was a well-known or international school?

Include it only if you are still listing school qualifications for other reasons, such as being a recent school leaver or applying in India. The school's reputation alone is not usually a reason to include it once you have a degree.

When you do include it, keep it to one line: "IB Diploma, Palm Grove International School, Dubai | 2023 | 39 points".

If an employer or scheme asks specifically about your secondary education, include the school on the form. Otherwise, focus your space on university results and projects.
