Radiographer / Radiology Technologist resume
This guide answers questions about writing a radiographer or radiology technologist resume. It covers summaries, modality and systems skills, example bullets for general X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography and interventional work, and how to present registration, radiation protection training and CPD. It also helps newly qualified radiographers, senior staff leading a unit and people applying abroad or moving into applications roles. All sample lines are fictional. This page covers resume presentation only; check licensing and registration rules with the official regulator where you plan to work.
How do I write a summary for a radiographer resume?
State your imaging modalities, your settings and one or two strengths in two or three lines. Imaging departments hire by modality, so name them clearly.
Include:
- Years of experience and your main modalities: general X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy, interventional.
- Setting: emergency department, outpatient imaging centre, theatre, trauma centre.
- One strength, such as paediatric imaging, high patient throughput or training students.
Example (fictional): "Diagnostic radiographer with five years in a busy trauma hospital, experienced in general X-ray, CT and mobile radiography in theatres and intensive care. Known for calm patient communication and supervising student radiographers."
Example (fictional): "Radiologic technologist cross-trained in CT, seeking a dedicated CT role in an outpatient centre."
Which skills should a radiology technologist list on a resume?
Group your skills by modality, equipment and patient care, so a manager can check fit quickly.
Common groups:
- Modalities: general radiography, CT, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy, DEXA, interventional.
- Equipment and systems: digital radiography units, mobile X-ray, PACS and RIS (image and radiology information systems), contrast injectors.
- Practice: radiation protection principles, image quality checks, positioning, contrast administration as permitted by your role.
- Patient care: paediatric and elderly patients, trauma patients, anxious patients, infection control.
Mention vendor names only for equipment you actually used, e.g. "Experienced on Fictional Medical 1.5T MRI scanner". Support key skills with bullets in your experience section.
How should I list my radiography registration or certification?
Put it in a "Licences and Registration" section near the top, with the issuing body, credential, number and expiry date if it has one.
Example format (fictional):
- "Registered Radiographer, Fictional Health Professions Board, Reg. No. RAD-56789, valid to 2027"
- "Certified Radiologic Technologist, Fictional Registry, CT post-primary certification, 2024"
Tips:
- Use the exact title from your certificate.
- List each country's registration separately.
- If an application in a new country is in progress, say so honestly.
Requirements differ by country and employer, so check with the official regulator where you plan to work. Do not imply you hold a credential you are still studying for.
What are good example bullets for a general X-ray radiographer?
Good bullets show volume, setting, patient groups and quality, without patient details.
Examples (fictional):
- "Performed general radiography for around 60 patients per shift in a busy emergency department."
- "Carried out mobile radiography in intensive care, theatres and wards, following local radiation protection rules."
- "Adapted positioning techniques for trauma, elderly and paediatric patients to obtain diagnostic images first time."
- "Checked image quality before sending studies to PACS, reducing repeat exposures on my shifts."
- "Supported on-call rota covering nights and weekends."
Pick four to six that best match the job and keep each one to a single line where possible.
How do I show CT or MRI experience on my resume?
Give the modality its own clear bullets, naming scan types, equipment strength or model in general terms, and the patient groups. Managers hiring for CT or MRI look for this first.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Performed CT head, chest, abdomen and trauma protocols on a 128-slice scanner in a major trauma centre."
- "Prepared patients for contrast CT, including screening questionnaires and cannulation where trained and authorised."
- "Completed MRI safety screening and scanned neuro and MSK patients on a 1.5T system."
If you are cross-training, write it honestly: "Currently completing CT competency training, expected June 2027." List modality certificates in Certifications with dates.
How do I show results on a radiographer resume?
Use counts and quality or process improvements that describe the service, not individual patients.
Ideas:
- Patients or exams per shift.
- Reduction in repeat images or waiting times from a change you made.
- Audits on dose, image quality or request forms.
- Students or new staff you trained.
Example (fictional): "Led a repeat-image audit in general X-ray that led to a positioning refresher for staff and fewer repeats in the next audit."
Example (fictional): "Helped open a new outpatient X-ray room by drafting workflow and checklist documents."
Avoid any patient names or images. Use approximate numbers you can explain at interview.
How do I write a resume as a newly qualified radiographer?
Lead with your qualification and clinical placements, listing the modalities and settings you were exposed to.
Structure:
- Summary: degree or diploma, main interests.
- Education.
- Clinical placements: hospital, department, length, and bullets.
- Registration or licence status.
- Training such as BLS and radiation protection courses.
Example placement bullet (fictional): "Completed supervised general and mobile radiography in A&E, wards and theatres during a 12-week placement."
Example (fictional): "Observed and assisted in CT and fluoroscopy lists, preparing patients and equipment."
One page is usually enough. Keep it clear that work was supervised.
Should I list the PACS and RIS systems I have used?
Yes, list the systems you have used, because imaging departments use them every day and want to know how much training you need. Put them in a "Systems" line under Skills.
Example (fictional): "Systems: PACS and RIS (Fictional Imaging Suite), electronic patient record, digital dose monitoring software."
If you used a vendor-specific product, you can name it, but do not claim deep knowledge of how it works internally. Add a bullet if you did something more than routine use, such as training colleagues or helping with an upgrade.
How do I mention radiation protection on a radiographer resume?
Show that you work within your local rules and radiation protection procedures, and list any related training or role you have held. Keep it about your practice, not technical guidance.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Applied justification and optimisation steps in line with departmental procedures for every exposure."
- "Acted as the department's radiation protection link radiographer, keeping local rules up to date and briefing new staff."
List radiation protection courses in Certifications with dates. If a formal appointment such as radiation protection supervisor applied, use the exact title your employer gave you.
What should a senior or lead radiographer resume focus on?
Focus on running the service: rotas, quality, staff development, equipment and working with radiologists and managers.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Managed day-to-day running of a CT unit with 3 scanners and a team of 12 radiographers."
- "Introduced a protocol review with radiologists, standardising scan protocols across sites."
- "Coordinated equipment acceptance and staff training for a new digital X-ray room."
- "Supervised student placements and led annual competency reviews."
Keep earlier hands-on bullets short. Your summary should name your leadership level and modality.
Is a sonographer resume the same as a radiographer resume?
No. Sonography is a specialist area with its own skills and often its own credentials, so make it the focus if you are applying for ultrasound roles.
For sonography, highlight:
- Exam types: abdominal, obstetric, gynaecological, vascular, MSK, echocardiography.
- Independent scanning and preliminary reports where your role allowed.
- Specific ultrasound qualifications.
Example (fictional): "Performed abdominal and obstetric ultrasound for around 15 patients per day in an outpatient imaging centre."
If you are a radiographer who also scans, list ultrasound as a modality and give it a few strong bullets. Use the professional title you are permitted to use.
What keywords appear in radiographer and radiology technologist adverts?
Typical keywords include modalities, settings, systems and safety terms. Mirror the ones that are true for you.
Examples:
- Diagnostic radiography, CT, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy, interventional radiology
- Mobile and theatre radiography, trauma, on-call
- PACS, RIS, image quality, dose optimisation
- Radiation protection, patient safety, infection control
- Registration, licence, BLS, CPD
Note that "radiographer" is common in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Gulf, while "radiologic technologist" or "radiology tech" is common in the US. You can use the advert's title in your summary to match the reader.
What section order should a radiographer resume use?
A reliable order is:
- Contact details
- Summary
- Licences and registration
- Modalities and skills
- Work experience
- Education
- Certifications and courses
- Professional memberships, audits or research
Placing registration and modalities near the top helps managers check fit quickly. For new graduates, put Education and Clinical Placements before work experience. Two pages are fine for experienced radiographers with multiple modalities.
How do I show mammography or breast imaging experience?
Name the setting and exam types in general terms, and show patient care for a sensitive exam. Mammography employers often look for specific training.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Performed screening and diagnostic mammography in a breast imaging centre, around 25 clients per day."
- "Supported stereotactic biopsy lists alongside radiologists."
- "Created a calm, private environment for clients, explaining each step before positioning."
List mammography training or certification with the year in Certifications.
How do I describe interventional radiology or cath lab experience?
Describe your role in the team, the types of procedures in general terms, and the equipment you used. Keep clinical decisions with the consultants who made them.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Operated fluoroscopy equipment for vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures."
- "Prepared the room and equipment, monitored dose records and worked within sterile field procedures."
- "Participated in an on-call rota for emergency procedures."
Mention BLS or advanced life support only if you hold it, with the date.
How do I move from radiography into an applications specialist or sales role?
Lead with your hands-on equipment knowledge, training of colleagues and communication skills. Imaging companies often hire radiographers to support customers and train staff.
Adapt your resume:
- New summary aimed at the target role.
- Bullets about training staff on new equipment, acceptance testing and protocol set-up.
- Presentation or teaching experience.
- Travel and driving licence if relevant.
Example summary (fictional): "CT radiographer with eight years of clinical practice moving into applications training, with experience setting up scan protocols and training 20 staff on a new scanner."
What mistakes are common on radiographer resumes?
The most common ones are unclear modalities, missing registration details and bullets that only list duties.
Check for:
- "Took X-rays" instead of modality, setting and volume.
- Registration number or expiry missing.
- Abbreviations like IR or DEXA without the full term once.
- Including patient details or sample images.
- No mention of PACS, RIS or the equipment you know.
- A summary that does not say which modality job you want.
Fixing these makes your resume clearer for both managers and applicant tracking systems.
How do I show paediatric imaging experience?
Show the setting, the age groups and how you adapted your approach for children and parents.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Performed general and fluoroscopy exams for children in a paediatric hospital, using play and distraction techniques with parents."
- "Applied age-specific exposure settings according to departmental protocols."
- "Worked with play specialists to prepare children for MRI without sedation where appropriate."
List paediatric courses and safeguarding training in Certifications.
Should I include on-call and night shift work on my radiographer resume?
Yes, include it, because it shows independence and the ability to handle emergencies with a smaller team. Many hospital roles need on-call cover.
Example (fictional): "Covered the out-of-hours rota as sole radiographer for X-ray and CT on weekend nights."
One line under each relevant job is enough. If you are applying for a role with no on-call, you can keep it short.
How can a radiographer applying abroad present overseas experience clearly?
Make the hospital type, size and equipment clear, and list registration in each country separately. A reader in another country may not know your employer.
Tips:
- Add a short descriptor: "Fictional General Hospital, a 600-bed public teaching hospital".
- Name modalities and equipment types.
- Show registration in your home country and your application status in the new country.
- Use the title common in the target country in your summary.
Example (fictional): "Radiographer from India with six years in CT and general X-ray, applying for roles in the UAE; DHA application in progress."
Check the official regulator's rules where you are applying.
Should I list professional memberships and CPD on a radiology resume?
Yes. A short Memberships line and a CPD or Courses section show that you keep your practice up to date.
Example (fictional):
- "Member, Fictional Society of Radiographers, since 2019"
- "CT Cardiac Imaging Course, 2024"
- "MRI Safety Update, 2025"
Keep membership separate from registration. List the most relevant CPD first, and summarise lots of small items in one line if needed.
How do I show patient care skills as a radiographer?
Give a bullet or two showing how you supported patients during imaging, especially anxious, frail or confused patients. Imaging is often a stressful experience for patients, and managers value this.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Explained procedures in plain language and checked understanding before each scan."
- "Supported patients with dementia and learning disabilities using adjusted appointment times and family presence."
- "Used safe moving and handling techniques for trauma and immobile patients."
Avoid generic phrases like "excellent patient care" without an example.
How do I present teaching and student supervision as a radiographer?
Name who you taught, how often and in what setting, and any formal educator role.
Example bullets (fictional):
- "Practice educator for undergraduate radiography students, supervising 4 students per year on placement."
- "Delivered monthly in-service sessions on positioning and image evaluation."
- "Wrote induction materials for newly qualified radiographers."
If you completed a practice educator course, list it in Certifications. This is useful for senior roles and moves into education.
How do I handle a career break on a radiographer resume?
List the break briefly, show any return-to-practice steps you have taken and keep your past experience clear. Employers mainly want to know your skills are up to date.
Steps:
- Add a short line, e.g. "Career break for family, 2023 to 2025."
- List refresher courses, supervised return-to-practice placements or updated registration.
- Put your strongest modality experience in the summary.
Example (fictional): "Returning radiographer with seven years of general X-ray and CT experience, recently completed a return-to-practice programme and refreshed radiation protection training."
Check with your regulator if any return-to-practice rules apply to you.
How do I list a nuclear medicine or radiotherapy background when applying for diagnostic roles?
List it honestly as a separate specialty and highlight the overlap: patient care, imaging technology, radiation safety and teamwork. Then show any diagnostic training you have added.
Example summary (fictional): "Therapeutic radiographer with five years in radiotherapy, completing a conversion programme to diagnostic radiography."
Example bullet (fictional): "Delivered daily radiotherapy treatments on linear accelerators, verifying patient positioning with on-board imaging."
Be clear about which title and registration you hold, since diagnostic and therapeutic roles are often registered separately. Check the regulator's rules before applying.
