Internships and placements – Page 2

What is a co-op, and how do I list one on my resume?

A co-op (cooperative education placement) is a paid work term that is part of some degree programmes, common in Canada and the USA. List it like a job or internship, with a note that it was a co-op term.

Example:
"Software Developer Co-op | Fictional Systems Inc., Toronto | May 2025 – Aug 2025

  • Built and tested two features for an internal scheduling tool."

If you completed several co-op terms, list each one with its own dates. They count as real work experience and should be described in detail.

Can my internship supervisor be my reference?

Yes, an internship supervisor is often one of the best references for a student, because they saw your work directly. Ask before you leave, or soon after, while they remember you well.

How to ask:

  • Thank them for the internship and ask if they would be willing to be a reference.
  • Ask for their preferred contact details.
  • Send them your resume and a short note about the jobs you are applying for.

Keep in touch occasionally, so they are not surprised when an employer contacts them.

How do I describe a specific project I did during my internship?

Name the project briefly, describe your role and what you produced, and give a result. A project can be one of your strongest internship bullets.

Example:
"Led a two-week project to map the customer onboarding process, interviewing four team members and producing a flowchart that the manager used to cut unnecessary steps."

If the project was large, you can use two bullets: one for what you did and one for the outcome. Make sure your role is clear: "led", "contributed to" and "supported" mean different things.

How do I show my own contribution when my internship work was a team effort?

Use verbs that accurately describe your part, and name the team's result separately. Readers want to know what you did, not just what the team achieved.

Examples:

  • "Contributed market research on three competitors to a team proposal that won a new client pitch."
  • "Wrote the data-cleaning scripts for a four-person analytics project."

Avoid "we" and avoid claiming the whole result. Verbs such as "contributed", "supported", "coordinated" and "prepared" are honest when you were one of several people.

How do I show the software and tools I learned during my internship?

Mention tools in the bullets where you used them, and add the most important ones to your skills section. Tools are more convincing when they are tied to a task.

Example bullets:

  • "Prepared monthly variance reports in SAP and Excel."
  • "Updated product listings in Shopify and tracked stock in Google Sheets."

In your skills section, list only tools you could use again confidently. If you only saw a tool briefly, it is better left off.

My internship rotated through several departments. How do I show that?

Use one entry for the internship and organise the bullets by department, or mention the rotation in the first bullet. This keeps it clear that it was one internship.

Example:
"Graduate Intern (Rotational Programme) | Fictional Group Holdings, Dubai | Jun 2025 – Sep 2025

  • Rotated through Finance, Procurement and Marketing over 12 weeks.
  • Finance: prepared monthly expense summaries for two business units.
  • Marketing: drafted social media posts for a product launch."

Choose the departments most relevant to your target job and give those the most detail.

The company where I interned has closed or changed its name. What do I write?

Use the name the company had when you worked there, and add the new name or a note if it helps. This keeps your history accurate and verifiable.

Examples:

  • "Marketing Intern | Fictional Media (now part of Brightwave Group) | 2024"
  • "Sales Intern | Fictional Trading LLC (company since closed) | 2023"

A closed company is no reason to remove a good internship. Keep a copy of any certificate or offer letter, and if possible keep contact details for your former supervisor, as these help if an employer wants to verify.

My supervisor praised my work. Can I include that on my resume?

Yes, if you turn it into a concrete fact rather than a quote. Formal recognition, such as an award or being asked to present, is the strongest form.

Examples:

  • "Selected as one of two interns to present research findings to the regional director."
  • "Rated 'exceeds expectations' in end-of-internship review."
  • "Received an Intern of the Month award (March 2025)."

Avoid quoting informal compliments on your resume. If you have a written recommendation, you can quote a short line in your cover letter instead.

How do I list a part-time internship I did during term?

List it as an internship and add "part-time" next to the title or dates. You can include the weekly hours if they help explain the role.

Example:
"Marketing Intern (part-time, 15 hours/week) | Fictional Events LLC, Dubai | Feb 2025 – May 2025"

Holding an internship alongside your studies also demonstrates good time management. Describe your work the same way as a full-time internship, focusing on what you did and achieved.

Two of my internships overlapped. How do I list them?

List both with their real dates, in order of start date or relevance. Overlapping dates are fine if they are accurate, for example a part-time internship running alongside a project-based one.

Make the arrangement clear:
"Research Intern (part-time) | University X | Jan 2025 – Jun 2025
Social Media Intern (remote, part-time) | Fictional Brand | Mar 2025 – May 2025"

If an interviewer asks how you managed both, explain your schedule briefly. Never adjust dates to hide an overlap.

What are good bullet points for a marketing internship?

Good marketing internship bullets name the channel, the task and any measurable result, such as reach, engagement, leads or time saved.

Examples:

  • "Wrote and scheduled 30 Instagram and LinkedIn posts for a product launch campaign."
  • "Analysed monthly social media performance and presented three recommendations to the marketing manager."
  • "Researched five competitor brands and summarised pricing and messaging in a one-page report."
  • "Coordinated logistics for a customer event attended by 120 guests."

Use real figures only if you know them. Replace the details with your own, keeping the same structure of action, task and result.

What are good bullet points for a finance internship?

Finance internship bullets should show accuracy, analysis and the tools you used, with figures where you can share them.

Examples:

  • "Reconciled bank statements for four company accounts each month, identifying and resolving discrepancies."
  • "Built an Excel model comparing three financing options for new equipment."
  • "Prepared variance analysis comparing actual expenses to budget for two departments."
  • "Assisted with year-end audit preparation by collecting and organising supporting documents."

If your work involved sensitive financial information, keep the descriptions general. Adjust the wording to match what you really did.

What are good bullet points for a civil engineering internship?

Civil engineering internship bullets should show site or design work, the tools you used and your attention to safety and quality.

Examples:

  • "Assisted site engineers with daily inspections of concrete works on a 10-storey residential project."
  • "Prepared quantity take-offs for reinforcement steel using AutoCAD drawings."
  • "Updated the site progress log and photo record for weekly client meetings."
  • "Attended safety briefings and helped check compliance with site safety checklists."

Describe your part honestly; most interns assist rather than lead. Name software and standards only if you actually used them.

What are good bullet points for an HR internship?

HR internship bullets should show organisation, communication and confidentiality, with clear tasks and outcomes.

Examples:

  • "Screened over 150 applications against job criteria and shortlisted candidates for the recruiter."
  • "Scheduled interviews and sent candidate communications for six open roles."
  • "Updated employee records in the HR system, ensuring data accuracy."
  • "Helped organise onboarding sessions for 12 new hires."

Avoid naming employees or sharing personal data. Use the HR systems you actually used, and keep descriptions factual.

What are good bullet points for a software engineering internship?

Software internship bullets should name what you built or fixed, the technologies used and the effect on users or the team.

Examples:

  • "Built a REST API endpoint in Node.js for retrieving order history, used by the mobile app."
  • "Fixed 15 front-end bugs in a React web application, including slow page loads reported by users."
  • "Wrote unit tests that raised coverage of a payments module."
  • "Documented setup steps for new developers in the team wiki."

Be specific about your contribution and avoid listing every technology the team used. Be ready to explain your code in a technical interview.

What are good bullet points for a sales internship?

Sales internship bullets should show customer contact, persuasion and results, such as leads found, meetings booked or sales supported.

Examples:

  • "Researched and qualified 80 potential B2B leads for the sales team."
  • "Made introductory calls to prospective clients and booked 12 meetings for account managers."
  • "Prepared product comparison sheets for use in client presentations."
  • "Updated customer information in the CRM after each call."

Use figures only when you know them. If you supported sales rather than closing them, say so clearly with verbs such as "supported" or "prepared".

I completed training or a certification during my internship. Where does it go?

Mention it briefly in the internship bullets, and list it in your certifications or training section if it is a recognised certificate. This shows both where you learned it and that you hold it.

Example bullet: "Completed the company's internal data protection training and applied it when handling customer records."

Certification section: "First Aid Certificate, issued through employer training programme, 2025."

Only list certificates you actually received. Internal training without a certificate can stay as a bullet.

I was given more responsibility than a typical intern. How do I show that?

Show the scope through specific facts: who you worked with, what you owned, and what decisions or outputs depended on you. Keep your title accurate and let the bullets show the level.

Examples:

  • "Managed the company's Instagram account independently for six weeks while the marketing coordinator was on leave."
  • "Ran weekly stock counts for two warehouses and reported directly to the operations manager."

Avoid saying "worked as a manager" or changing your title. Concrete details prove responsibility far better than claims.

How should I write dates for a very short internship?

Use month and year, and add the length in weeks if the internship was shorter than a month or two. This makes the duration clear.

Examples:

  • "Jul 2025 (3 weeks)"
  • "Jun 2025 – Jul 2025 (6 weeks)"

If several entries on your resume use month-and-year format, keep this the same, with the weeks in brackets as extra information. Avoid listing exact days, which looks cluttered.

I have already graduated. Can I still take and list an internship?

Yes. Graduate internships are common, and you list them the same way as any internship. Some organisations call them "graduate internships" or "graduate trainee" roles.

Example:
"Graduate Intern, Communications | Fictional Foundation, Sharjah | Sep 2025 – Dec 2025"

Describe your work fully. Since you have finished your degree, you can place this internship above education if it is your most relevant experience.

My internship turned into a part-time job. How do I show it?

Show both roles under the same organisation, with separate titles and dates. This shows that the employer valued your work enough to keep you.

Example:
"Fictional Digital Agency, Dubai
Junior Content Writer (part-time) | Sep 2025 – Present

  • Write two blog articles a week for client websites.

Content Intern | Jun 2025 – Aug 2025

  • Researched topics and drafted social media captions."

Put the most recent role first. This layout makes your progression clear.

How do nursing or health students show clinical placements on a resume?

List clinical placements in a dedicated section, with the setting, ward or specialty, dates and hours if your programme records them. Healthcare employers often expect this information.

Example:
"Clinical Placements

  • Medical-Surgical Ward, Fictional General Hospital | Jan 2025 – Mar 2025 | 240 hours
  • Paediatrics, Fictional Children's Clinic | Apr 2025 – May 2025 | 160 hours"

Add a few bullets about skills you practised under supervision, such as patient observations or medication rounds. Never share patient details. Check any licensing requirements with the regulator in your country.

How do I list teaching practice or a student teaching placement?

List it as experience, with the school, subjects or grade levels, dates and what you did. For teaching jobs, it is one of the most important parts of your resume.

Example:
"Student Teacher | Fictional Primary School, Al Ain | Feb 2025 – Apr 2025

  • Planned and taught 20 English lessons to Grade 4 pupils under a mentor teacher.
  • Used group activities and visual aids to support pupils with mixed reading levels."

Mention any feedback or assessment results from your placement if they were strong. Protect pupils' privacy.

How do I describe a law firm internship?

Describe the types of matters you worked on, the research and drafting you did, and any court or client exposure, without revealing confidential details.

Example:
"Legal Intern | Fictional Advocates & Legal Consultants, Dubai | Jun 2025 – Aug 2025

  • Researched case law on commercial lease disputes and summarised findings for associates.
  • Drafted first versions of client letters and contract clauses for review.
  • Attended court hearings and prepared hearing notes."

Do not name clients or cases unless they are public and your firm permits it.

Paralegal / Legal Assistant resume builder

I interned at a government entity. How much can I say?

Say what you did in general terms and follow any confidentiality rules you agreed to. Many government and semi-government organisations limit what can be shared.

Example:
"Intern, Strategy Department | A government entity, Abu Dhabi | Jul 2025 – Aug 2025

  • Compiled benchmarking data on public service performance from published sources.
  • Prepared presentation slides for internal workshops."

If you are allowed to name the entity, do so; it can carry weight. If unsure, ask your supervisor or use a general description like the one above.
