How do I show an ITI trade certificate and apprenticeship on my resume?

Put the ITI certificate in your Education section with the trade name, institute and year, and list the apprenticeship as work experience with tasks and tools. Employers hiring electricians, fitters, welders and technicians look for both together.

Example:
"ITI Certificate, Electrician trade, Government ITI, Ludhiana, 2021"
"Apprentice Electrician, a steel plant in Punjab, 2021 to 2022

  • Assisted with motor rewinding and panel wiring.
  • Followed lock-out and tag-out safety procedures."

Tips:

  • Name your trade exactly as on the certificate.
  • List tools and equipment you can use.
  • Add any safety or trade test certificates with dates. If a job needs a licence, give it with its number and expiry as the issuing body requires.

Are NCC, NSS or sports achievements worth including on an Indian resume?

Yes, for freshers and students they are worth a short entry, especially if you held a rank, led a team or reached state or national level. Indian recruiters recognise NCC and NSS, and they show discipline, service and leadership.

Example:
"NCC 'C' Certificate, Army Wing, 2023. Senior Under Officer, led a platoon of 40 cadets at annual training camp."
"NSS volunteer, 2021 to 2023. Organised three blood donation camps with the district hospital."

Where to put them:

  • Under "Positions of Responsibility" or "Extracurricular Activities".
  • If NCC is relevant to the job (security, defence-linked roles, logistics), mention it in your summary too.

After several years of work experience, keep one line or remove them to make space for professional results.

Student resume builder

Should I put NPTEL, SWAYAM or online course certificates on my resume?

Yes, if they relate to the job. Online certificates show initiative, and Indian recruiters recognise NPTEL and similar platforms, especially for freshers. Keep the list short and relevant.

Example:
"Certifications

  • Data Science for Engineers, NPTEL (IIT Madras), 2024
  • Google Analytics Certification, 2025"

Tips:

  • Pick three to six that match the role; leave out unrelated courses.
  • Mention the issuing institution and year.
  • If you scored well or ranked as a topper, you can add it.
  • Skills from these courses should also appear in your projects or experience, not only in the list.

Do not list courses you only started. If you are still doing one, write "in progress" with the expected completion month.

I've cleared CA Intermediate but not CA Final. How do I write that?

Write exactly which level and groups you have cleared, with the month and year, and mention that you are pursuing the final level. Indian finance recruiters know these stages well and will look for precise wording.

Example:
"Chartered Accountancy, ICAI. Intermediate (both groups) cleared, May 2024. CA Final: pursuing."
"Company Secretary, ICSI. Executive level cleared, December 2024."

Tips:

  • Do not write "CA" after your name until you are a member.
  • Mention articleship or practical training separately, with the firm and dates.
  • If you have cleared one group only, say "Group I cleared".
  • The same approach works for CMA, CS and similar staged qualifications.

What's the right way to show a PGDM versus an MBA on my resume?

Write the qualification exactly as it is awarded: "PGDM" if you received a Post Graduate Diploma in Management and "MBA" if you received a university degree. Indian recruiters know both and many treat them similarly for management roles, but your resume must match your certificate.

Example: "PGDM (Marketing), XYZ Institute of Management, Pune, 2025. CGPA: 3.4/4"

Tips:

  • Add your specialisation in brackets.
  • Do not relabel a PGDM as an MBA to sound more familiar; verification will check the certificate.
  • If you are applying abroad, you can add a short explanation once: "Two-year full-time postgraduate management programme."
  • List your summer internship separately, with the company and project outcome.

Do I need to sign my resume with place and date at the bottom?

Not for most private-sector jobs in India. The "Place / Date / Signature" block is a traditional habit, and many recruiters view resumes on screen or in job portals, where a signature line serves no purpose.

Keep it only when:

  • A government, PSU or traditional employer asks for a signed application or biodata.
  • You are handing over a printed resume at a walk-in where the employer has requested it.

Never paste a scanned image of your signature into a resume you send by email or upload online. It adds no value and can be copied. If an employer needs your signature, they will ask for it on their own forms or the offer letter.

What should a "Personal Profile" section on an Indian resume contain today?

Keep it short, or replace it entirely with a few useful lines. Older Indian resumes have a long Personal Profile with father's name, date of birth, gender, religion, nationality, marital status and hobbies. Most private employers do not need these.

If you keep a section, include only what helps the application:

  • Languages known.
  • Current location and willingness to relocate.
  • Notice period.
  • Passport availability, if the role involves travel abroad.
  • Driving licence, for field or sales roles.

Example:
"Additional details: Languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati. Location: Ahmedabad, open to relocation. Notice period: 30 days."

Leave out religion, caste and family details. They are not related to your ability to do the job.

Open the resume builder

Should I include my caste, religion or category on a private-sector resume?

No. Private employers do not need caste, religion or reservation category on a resume, and including them can invite bias. Your resume should be about your skills, qualifications and experience.

Where category does matter:

  • Government, PSU and some public institution recruitments that apply reservations ask for category on the official application form, along with the supporting certificate.
  • Scholarship or educational applications may ask for it separately.

In those cases, give the information in the form the notification asks for, not on your general resume. For corporate jobs, leave it out completely.

Should I put my Aadhaar, PAN or passport number on my resume?

No. Do not put Aadhaar, PAN or passport numbers on a resume. A resume gets forwarded, uploaded to portals and stored in many places, and these numbers can be misused. Employers collect them later, during onboarding or background verification, through their own secure process.

What you can say instead:

  • "Valid Indian passport" if the role involves international travel.
  • "Passport valid until 2031", without the number, if the employer is hiring for postings abroad.

If a consultancy asks you to put identity numbers in the resume itself, ask why and offer to share them on a proper form only after an offer or interview. Genuine employers will understand.

How do I write dates on my resume: 05/03/2024 or March 2024?

Use month and year in words, such as "Mar 2024" or "March 2024". Numeric dates like 05/03/2024 are read as 5 March in India but 3 May in the United States, so words avoid confusion, especially at multinational companies.

Example: "Business Analyst, Mumbai, Jun 2022 to Present"

Tips:

  • Use one style for every entry.
  • Exact days are not needed for jobs; month and year are enough.
  • For education, the year of passing is usually enough: "B.Sc. Physics, 2021".
  • On government forms that ask for DD/MM/YYYY, follow the form.

I studied at a lesser-known college. Should I leave the college name off?

No. Always name your college and university. Leaving it off looks like you are hiding something, and background verification will check it anyway. Instead, make the rest of your resume carry more weight.

Ways to stand out:

  • Put strong projects, internships or certifications above education if you have them.
  • Add measurable results to every bullet you can.
  • Show skills with links: GitHub, a portfolio or published work.
  • Mention ranks, scholarships or competitions you won.

Many employers in India hire widely from colleges across the country, particularly through off-campus drives, portals and skills tests. A clear, specific resume gives you the best chance in those processes.

Resume With No Experience: A Guide for Freshers

What should I carry for a walk-in interview drive in India?

Carry several printed copies of your resume plus the documents the advert lists. Walk-in drives are common for BPO, sales, IT support and retail roles, and recruiters often meet many candidates in one day, so a clear printed resume helps.

A typical checklist:

  • Three to five copies of your resume on plain A4 paper.
  • Passport-size photographs if the advert asks for them.
  • Original and photocopies of mark sheets and certificates.
  • Experience or relieving letters from previous employers, if you have them.
  • A photo ID.

Print in black and white with a simple layout so it photocopies well. Write the role or reference code from the advert on top if the drive is for several roles.

Should I list my relieving letter or experience certificate on my resume?

No, the resume does not need to mention them. Experience and relieving letters are proof documents that employers ask for during background verification or joining. Mentioning them on the resume takes space and adds nothing.

What helps instead:

  • Use exactly the job title and company name that appear on your experience letter, so verification goes smoothly.
  • Use dates that match the letter.
  • Keep scanned copies ready to share when asked.

If you do not have a relieving letter (for example the company closed), be ready to explain and offer payslips, a bank statement or an offer letter as alternatives. Do not change dates on your resume to hide the problem.

How should my mobile number and email look on an Indian resume?

Write your mobile number with the +91 country code and use a simple, professional email address based on your name. Many Indian applications pass through consultancies and international teams, so the country code avoids confusion.

Example: "+91 98765 43210 | priya.nair.work@gmail.com | linkedin.com/in/priyanair"

Tips:

  • Use one number you actually answer during working hours.
  • Avoid nicknames, birth years and joke handles in email addresses.
  • Do not list two or three phone numbers; one main number is enough.
  • Keep the same number on job portals so recruiters can reach you.

How do I translate a government or PSU designation for a private company?

Keep your official designation and add a short plain-English description of the role in the same line or first bullet. Titles such as "Junior Engineer Grade II", "UDC" or "Section Officer" are clear inside government but may confuse private recruiters.

Example:
"Assistant Engineer (Civil), State Public Works Department, 2016 to 2025

  • Managed road and building projects worth 40 crore per year, supervising contractors and site quality checks."

Tips:

  • Do not replace your official title with a private-sector title; verification checks it.
  • Focus bullets on results, budgets, teams and processes, not just duties from the service rules.
  • Translate acronyms the first time you use them.
  • Replace department jargon with common business terms where accurate.

I'm a returning NRI. How do I adjust my Gulf resume for jobs in India?

Keep your international experience front and centre, but remove Gulf-specific details Indian employers do not need and add India-specific ones they do. Indian recruiters value overseas experience, but they want to know you are available and how your work transfers.

Changes to make:

  • Remove visa status and "transferable visa" lines.
  • Add your current or planned city in India and your joining date.
  • Convert currency figures to a form readers understand, or use plain numbers.
  • Mention well-known clients, standards or systems you worked with abroad.
  • Add notice period and willingness to relocate within India.

Example summary: "Procurement manager with 11 years in Dubai and Riyadh, returning to Hyderabad in April 2026; experienced in SAP Ariba and vendor development."

I'm in India applying to a multinational's Indian office. Should my resume follow Indian or international style?

Lean towards the international style, with a few Indian details that recruiters still check. Multinational offices in India usually prefer a concise, skills-first resume without the traditional personal profile, but they still read Indian education and notice periods.

A good middle ground:

  • One to two pages, no photo, no father's name, no declaration.
  • Clear summary and achievement-based bullets.
  • Education with degree, institution and CGPA; 10th and 12th only if you are a fresher.
  • Notice period and location in a short line.
  • A4 page size and simple, single-column layout.

If you are later transferred or apply to the same company abroad, you can remove the India-only details and keep the rest.

Is it better to write my resume in Hindi or English for jobs in India?

English for most private, corporate and multinational roles, and Hindi or a regional language only when the employer or role clearly prefers it. Many job portals, applicant tracking systems and HR teams in India work in English.

Hindi or regional-language resumes can suit:

  • Local government or community roles where the advert is in Hindi.
  • Some field, retail or service jobs where the hiring manager prefers it.

If you are unsure, send English, and mention your Hindi or regional language skills clearly. In ResumeBuilder.ae you can choose Hindi (Devanagari) or Malayalam as the resume language on the Design tab, so you can prepare a second version if an employer asks for one.

What is a "resume headline" on Indian job portals, and should it match my resume?

A resume headline is the one-line description that appears on your portal profile, and it should match the title and summary on your resume. Recruiters searching portals often see this line first, so it works like the title of your application.

Example: "Java Backend Developer, 4 years, Spring Boot and AWS, Pune"

Tips:

  • Include your role, experience level and two or three key skills.
  • Use the same job title on your resume so it does not look inconsistent.
  • Update it whenever you change role or gain a major skill.
  • Avoid phrases like "looking for a good opportunity"; they do not help searches.

The rules for each portal differ, so check its help pages for length limits.

Resume Keywords and Job Descriptions

How often should I update the resume I uploaded to an Indian job portal?

Update it whenever something meaningful changes, such as a new role, skill, certification or notice period, and review it every few months while you are job hunting. An out-of-date resume on a portal can lead to calls for roles you no longer want or recruiters seeing old information.

A simple routine:

  • Re-upload after every promotion or job change.
  • Check that the file name is professional. Example: "Ravi_Kumar_Data_Analyst_Resume.pdf"
  • Make sure the uploaded resume, the portal profile fields and your LinkedIn match.
  • Remove old versions you do not want shared.

How portals rank profiles is not public and varies, so focus on accuracy and relevant keywords rather than tricks.

How should a teacher show B.Ed and teacher eligibility test results on a resume in India?

List B.Ed in Education with the university and year, and give teacher eligibility test results in a separate "Teaching Eligibility" or "Certifications" line with the paper and year. Indian schools often screen for both before reading further.

Example:
"B.Ed, Savitribai Phule Pune University, 2022
CTET Paper II (Social Science) qualified, January 2023"

Tips:

  • Mention the subjects and classes you are trained to teach.
  • Add your main degree with subjects, as schools check subject eligibility.
  • Include teaching practice or internship schools and the classes you taught.
  • If the post needs specific qualifications, the school's advert will say so; follow it.

Teacher resume builder

How do I show a university rank or gold medal on my resume?

Put it next to the degree in your Education section, and repeat it briefly in your summary if you are a fresher. Ranks and medals are respected by Indian recruiters and are quick proof of academic strength.

Example: "M.Sc. Chemistry, University of Mysore, 2024. CGPA: 9.2/10. University Gold Medal (Rank 1)"

Tips:

  • Write the exact recognition from your certificate.
  • If there were several, use a short "Awards" section.
  • Do not call a department or class rank a "university rank".
  • After several years of work, keep it in Education but drop it from the summary.

Should I mention gender on my resume in India?

You do not need to. Gender used to appear in the personal profile of older Indian resumes, but most private employers do not ask for it on a resume. Your name and contact details are enough.

When it may come up:

  • Government application forms collect it as part of the official process.
  • Some employers run diversity hiring programmes and will ask on their own form, not your resume.

If you prefer a particular title or pronouns, you can add them next to your name, but this is optional. Leaving gender off keeps the focus on your skills and avoids any bias at the screening stage.

Do Indian employers expect references on the resume?

Usually not on the resume itself. Many Indian employers carry out background verification through a third-party agency and ask for references or former managers' contacts on a form, often after an offer. A line such as "References available on request" is optional and many people leave it out.

When to include references:

  • The job advert asks for them.
  • Academic, research or teaching roles where referees are part of the application.
  • Small firms that call references before an interview.

If you add them, include name, designation, organisation, phone and email, and ask permission first. Never list a current manager without warning them.

How do I list an articleship or internship with a CA firm?

Show it as work experience with the firm name, dates and the audits, tax and accounts work you handled. For CA students, articleship is the main practical experience recruiters assess, so give it proper bullets.

Example:
"Article Assistant, Mehta and Associates, Chartered Accountants, Ahmedabad, Jan 2023 to Dec 2025

  • Conducted statutory audits for manufacturing and trading clients.
  • Prepared GST returns and reconciliations for 15 clients each month.
  • Assisted in tax audit reports and income tax filings."

Tips:

  • Name the types of clients and industries.
  • List the software you used, such as Tally or SAP.
  • Mention any industrial training period separately.
