A consultancy asked for my resume "in Word format". What should I do if I only have a PDF?
Ask whether a PDF is acceptable first, because many recruiters only want Word so they can add their logo or edit details. If they insist on Word, copy your resume text into a word processor and save it as .docx, keeping the layout simple.
ResumeBuilder.ae exports PDF only, with selectable text, so you can copy text from the builder into Word if you need both.
Tips:
- Check the consultancy's version before it goes to the employer, if you can, so no details are changed.
- Ask them not to add personal details you deliberately left out.
- Keep a PDF version for direct applications and portals.
How do I make an engineering resume for core companies, not IT jobs?
Focus on your branch skills, plant or site exposure and technical projects, not on coding skills unless they relate to the role. Core companies in manufacturing, power, construction and automotive look for domain knowledge and practical exposure.
Put near the top:
- Industrial training and internships at plants, sites or workshops.
- Design tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, STAAD or MATLAB, as relevant.
- Projects tied to your branch, with results.
- Safety training and quality knowledge, such as basic ISO or Six Sigma awareness.
Example: "Designed a jig to reduce drilling setup time on a two-wheeler component line during summer internship."
Move generic programming skills further down, or remove them if they are not relevant.
Do I need to add a "Willing to relocate" line for jobs in India?
Add it if you are genuinely open to moving, because Indian employers, especially in manufacturing, banking, sales and IT services, often post staff to other cities. It can help you get shortlisted for roles outside your home city.
Example: "Location: Jaipur. Open to relocation anywhere in India."
Example: "Location: Chennai. Prefer Chennai or Bengaluru."
Tips:
- Be honest; if you accept an offer and then refuse to relocate, it hurts your reputation.
- If you prefer certain cities, name them.
- Update your job portal preferences to match.
What should an IT services fresher resume look like for mass recruitment drives?
Keep it to one clean page, with academics, skills and projects clearly laid out, because large recruiters often first filter on eligibility and then on aptitude and coding tests. Your resume mainly needs to be accurate and easy to read.
Include:
- Academic record with CGPA and 10th/12th marks, plus year of passing.
- Programming languages and tools you can actually use.
- Two or three projects with a line each on what you built.
- Certifications and coding competition results.
- No active backlogs, if that is true and relevant.
Example: "Built a library management system in Java and MySQL with role-based login; team of three."
Eligibility rules are set by each company's drive, so read the notification before applying.
Should I use A4 size for my resume in India?
Yes. A4 is the standard paper size in India, used by printers, offices and most employers. If your resume template defaults to US Letter, switch it to A4 before downloading, especially if you will print copies for interviews.
Why it matters:
- A Letter-size PDF printed on A4 may be scaled or cut at the edges.
- Indian employers and printers expect A4.
ResumeBuilder.ae offers both A4 and US Letter. Choose A4 for India and switch to Letter only for jobs in the United States or Canada if an employer asks.
