Finding and sending files on a phone – Page 2
Can I choose where Safari saves downloads on my iPhone?
Yes. In your iPhone's settings for Safari, there is usually a Downloads option where you can choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or another folder. Menu names can change between iOS versions.
Which to choose:
- On My iPhone: files stay on the device, available offline.
- iCloud Drive: files sync to your other Apple devices but use iCloud storage.
After changing it, download a test file and check it appears where you expect in the Files app. If you can't find the setting, use the Downloads folder in Files and move your resume into your own folder after each download.
How do I make Chrome on Android ask me where to save files?
Look in Chrome's settings for the Downloads section and turn on the option to ask where to save files. Wording and placement can vary with versions and phone makers.
Why it can help:
- You choose your "Job applications" folder straight away.
- You can rename the file before saving.
Why you might leave it off:
- An extra step each time, and pressing Cancel by mistake means nothing is saved.
If you leave it off, files usually go to the Downloads folder. Either way, open the browser's downloads list after saving to confirm the file is complete.
Where do downloads go on an iPad?
Usually to a Downloads folder in the Files app, either in iCloud Drive or On My iPad, depending on your settings. It works much like an iPhone.
To find your resume:
- Tap the downloads icon in Safari's toolbar, if it shows one, and tap the file.
- Or open the Files app, go to Browse and look for Downloads.
- Search for "CV", "resume" or your name.
On iPad you can use Split View to have Files and an email or job site open side by side, which makes it easy to drag your resume into an application. Check the file opens properly before attaching it.
Can I open my resume PDF on my phone without internet?
Yes, once the file is saved on the phone itself. A downloaded PDF in your Files app opens offline; only files stored in cloud storage or inside an email may need a connection.
To make sure it works offline:
- Save the PDF to your phone storage, for example "On My iPhone" or your Android Downloads folder.
- For files in cloud storage, use the option to make them available offline.
- Test by switching on airplane mode and opening the file.
Sending the file still needs a connection, but having it on the phone is useful for interviews and job fairs, where you may want to show or check your resume without signal.
My phone shows the download as "pending" or "queued". Why?
The phone is waiting for something: a connection, a setting or storage space. Downloads often queue when data saver is on, Wi-Fi-only downloads are set, or storage is nearly full.
Things to check:
- Turn off data saver, or connect to Wi-Fi.
- Check whether the browser is set to download only on Wi-Fi.
- Free up storage space.
- Cancel the queued download and start it again.
Keep the browser open while the file downloads. If you are downloading your ResumeBuilder.ae PDF after paying, a failed download can be retried, and you can download again for 7 days, up to 10 attempts.
The browser says the PDF downloaded, but I can't see it in my Files app. Why?
The file may be in a different storage area from the one you're looking at, such as a work profile, a secure or private folder, a memory card, or a cloud location. Opening it from the browser shows you where it went.
Check:
- The browser's downloads list: tap the file to open it, or look for its location.
- Other storage places in your Files app, like a memory card or cloud drive.
- Whether you used a work profile or a second copy of the browser; files there are separate.
- Whether the Files app shows hidden or private folders.
Once you find it, move the PDF to a normal folder you can reach from any app, so job sites can see it when you upload.
How do I save a resume PDF from an email attachment onto my phone?
Open the attachment, then use the download, save or share option to save it to your Files app. This is handy when you emailed the resume to yourself from a computer.
General steps:
- Open the email and tap the PDF attachment to preview it.
- Look for a download or save icon, or tap Share and choose to save to Files.
- Pick your "Job applications" folder.
- Open the saved copy from Files to check it.
Saving it to your files, rather than leaving it only in the email, makes it available in the file chooser on job sites and in other apps, and offline.
Is it OK to post my resume in a WhatsApp job group?
Be careful. A group may have many members you don't know, and your resume contains your phone number, email and work history. Share it only in groups you trust that are run for genuine hiring.
Safer approach:
- Read the job post and contact the poster privately, or apply through the official application page.
- Leave out unnecessary personal details from the resume, such as your full home address.
- Never share passport, visa or ID copies in groups.
- Be wary of anyone asking for money to "process" your application.
If you do share in a group, use a professional message and the PDF as a document, and expect that others in the group can save and forward it.
My phone keeps saving my resume in a secure or private folder. Is that a problem?
It can be. Files in a secure, locked or private folder are often hidden from other apps, so job sites, email and messaging apps may not see your resume when you try to attach it.
What to do:
- Open the secure folder app and move or copy the PDF out to ordinary storage, such as Downloads or "Job applications".
- Check which browser you used: a browser inside the secure folder saves files there.
- Try attaching again once the file is in normal storage.
Keep sensitive documents, such as ID copies, in the secure folder if you like, but your resume needs to be reachable when you apply.
My resume opened as strange symbols on my phone. What happened?
The phone probably opened the PDF in the wrong kind of app, such as a text editor, or the file is incomplete. A healthy PDF opened in a PDF viewer shows your normal layout.
Fix it:
- Long-press the file and choose "Open with", then pick a PDF viewer or your browser.
- Check the file ends in ".pdf" and isn't 0 KB.
- If you renamed it, make sure you didn't change or remove ".pdf".
- Download it again if it still shows symbols.
If one specific language looks wrong only on your phone but fine on a computer, that's a viewer issue rather than a broken file; try a different viewer before sending.
I don't have an email app set up on my phone. How can I send my resume?
Use your email provider's website in your phone browser, or set up the email app with your account. Both let you attach a PDF from your Files app.
Using the browser:
- Sign in to your email website.
- Compose a message and tap the attachment option.
- Choose your resume PDF from your files.
Setting up an app:
- Install your email provider's app or use the phone's built-in mail app.
- Sign in with your email address and password.
Use a professional address based on your name rather than a nickname. Send a test to yourself first to check the attachment arrives.
My phone always opens PDFs in the browser. Can I change the default app?
Yes, on most phones. On Android, you can usually change or clear the default app for PDFs in the phone's app settings; on iPhone, Files previews PDFs and you can use Share to send them to another app.
Android in general:
- Open settings, find Apps, then the app that currently opens PDFs.
- Look for an "Open by default" or "Set as default" option and clear it.
- Next time you open a PDF, the phone asks which app to use; choose your preferred viewer.
Opening in the browser is fine for checking a resume, though, so you only need to change this if it is inconvenient.
The Files app is missing from my iPhone. How do I get it back?
Search for it first, and if it was removed, reinstall it free from the App Store. The Files app is part of iOS, but people sometimes delete it or move it into a folder.
Steps:
- Swipe down on the home screen and search for "Files".
- Check the App Library, where apps removed from the home screen still appear.
- If it isn't installed, search the App Store for Apple's Files app and install it.
Once it is back, your Downloads folder and other saved files should show up again. Use it to find, rename, move and share your resume PDF.
I can't find a Files app on my Android phone. What is it called?
It depends on the phone maker; it may be called Files, My Files, File Manager or similar. Look in the app drawer or search your phone for "files".
If you really have none:
- Install a well-known file manager from the official app store.
- Or open your browser's downloads list, which shows recent downloads and lets you open or share them.
Once you find it, look for a Downloads folder or a Documents category; your resume PDF is usually there. You can then move it into a "Job applications" folder so it's easy to find each time you apply.
My iPhone saved my resume in Books. How do I get it into Files?
Open the PDF in Books, use the Share option and choose to save to Files. Books keeps its PDFs inside its own library, which is less convenient when you need to attach the file elsewhere.
Steps in general terms:
- Open Books and tap the resume.
- Tap the screen to show the controls, then tap Share.
- Choose the option to save to Files and pick a folder.
Next time you download a PDF, choose to save to Files rather than open in Books. With the resume in Files, it shows up in the file chooser of email apps and job sites, and you can rename it easily.
